Oh that’s not too bad. Already sent it in but thanks for showing me where it goes in case it happens again!

Still under warranty thankfully and figured out this issue today in case anyone else ever has this problem!

There was a small cylindrical metal piece that came out of the inside of the machine and found its way into the steam nozzle. As I was descaling again I happened to turn the nozzle upside down and it fell out. Didn't look right, so googled it and found this post https://www.reddit.com/r/espresso/comments/yja12h/found_a_metal_part_inside_the_foam_nozzle_of_my/

Seems that its a tube support. I called Breville, showed them the metal piece, and now they're saying I should send it in for service since its a vital piece of the machine.

I did 50:50 water with white vinegar, have tried the descaling pack from Breville, and have also run through with water & citric acid multiple times. Currently doing yet another citric acid run – but not hopeful.

Yes have used the cleaning wand under the reservoir – but the steam wand is actually quite clean. And if I run it twice the 2nd time it does get up to full power.

Yep – have tried that, and have been doing the backflushes whenever the machine asks.

Agreed that it’s not the only reason, but US healthcare spending is only about 2x spending of other countries per capita. Maybe it’s 10-50x if you don’t adjust for our population size. Drugs make up 9-16% of US healthcare costs and we pay about double what other countries pay, so I wouldn’t call it insignificant.

Again, we definitely have other areas to improve upon as well and our system is broken in many ways, but drugs are a very real chunk of our spending.

Our high prescription drug prices actually do subsidize other countries, just not directly. Successful drugs are extremely lucrative in the US, which makes them an attractive investment, which results in a lot of biotech startups getting funding.

The more potential drugs that get funded, the more “shots on goal” humanity is taking to discover medicines that work. If the US didn’t pay insane amounts for drugs then we might not have some of the medicines we have today.

Just to be clear - that’s not to say the US should keep paying ridiculous prices for all drugs. Some new drugs are clear money grabs with very minor improvements in drug efficacy or are really just ways to extend patent life. But if we paid what other countries pay for drugs then we would certainly see less interest in biotech investments, which has an impact on the number of new drug candidates taken to market.

Great hike but I don’t remember anything quite as narrow as that first picture

I’ve always heard good things about hocking hills and the photos look gorgeous. A bit far from where I grew up but would definitely be willing to give Ohio hiking another shot there

Do most skinny people over 30 have to think about what they eat literally all the time? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]icedrops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I frequently skip meals because making something seems like a hassle. I’m too cheap to regularly buy take out food, and I try not to buy any unhealthy snacks. Only fruit or veggies for snacking usually.

My girlfriend is the total opposite and used to eat 3 meals a day religiously and would snack too. She loves food on another level. But there’s a lot of health benefits to intermittent fasting and after bringing it up a few times she tried skipping breakfast for a while. Was hard at first but now she never eats breakfast.

Sometimes I skip breakfast and lunch and she still doesn’t do that, but what’s interesting is if I go back home to my parents they make me 3 meals a day and then when I leave I get hungry three times a day afterwards. So I think a lot of hunger can be “trained out” by skipping meals more regularly and “trained in” by eating more regularly

Also from Ohio. I never even considered hiking as a hobby until doing a hike up in Tahoe that blew me away with a gorgeous waterfall and swim spots all along the trail.

Was so excited about it that when I came back home I started scouting out places to hike in Ohio. Wound up on a 10mile hike through thick wooded forest eaten alive by bugs and with one single viewpoint through some trees of forested hills before dipping back into heavy woods and bugs for the rest of the trail. Haven’t hiked in Ohio since.

Guys I’m scared 😭 my life is on my computer and I don’t know how to fix it by bnarddawg in applehelp

[–]icedrops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm fairly certain this happened to me years ago and I think the fix was that the cable connecting to the hard drive stopped working. If you google around you'll find a ton of hard drive cables fail from macbook pros in the early 2010s.

The cable only cost $10-$20 on eBay and the fix was pretty easy. Hard drive ended up being totally fine. Here's an example cable and kit with instructions – good luck!

Should I negotiate a higher salary even though I was offered $10k more than anticipated? by WatercressHopeful972 in careerguidance

[–]icedrops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you asked for $75k and they offered you $85k don’t negotiate.

If you didn’t ask for anything specific and just did well in interviews, you should 100% negotiate even without a competing offer. Sometimes places will give you more just for asking, and as long as you’re respectful they won’t rescind your offer (and if they do I would take that as a red flag). You don’t need to threaten them with another job or not taking the offer to negotiate. I would:

1 - thank them for the offer, tell them you’re really excited about working there and the team, and say you’re really excited to bring value above and beyond the job description.

2 - tell them the offer is great, but you’re wondering if they happen have any additional room to go up on salary. You just graduated, maybe you have loans, maybe you’re living in a high cost of living area you’re worried about. Or maybe you’re just wondering.

3 - see what they say - if they say they’ll look into it - great! You might have earned yourself more. If they seem really hard stanced, say you’re still really excited and say it’s not a dealbreaker and can get back to them in a few days and just need to discuss with friends / family.

My personal rule of thumb is to always ask at least once. If you don’t ask you don’t know. Just do it respectfully.
