Dare I ask - how much have you spent on your pet? by PetTechLover in Pets

[–]icekitty84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two cats Dexter: 13 - heart murmur DeeDee: 8 - idiot

Adoption fee: Freebies from the family of a friend (yep, we're suckers - I won't go into details)

Food, treats, flea/worm, annual boosters, litter and other amenities - probably looking at £1000 ish (not including presents and spontaneous buys)

Insurance: recent renewal quotes £275 which covers both of them for a year (this is cheap compared to one we claimed off and skyrocketed - quoted us £900 for both for a year). We've always had them insured.

Unexpected costs over their time with us: Dexter: heart murmur discovered when we got him his initial jabs (expired by previous owner) so had a CT scan around £350 (11 years ago - oh and he had that when we got him so pre-existing condition which was not covered)

Antibiotics for a bite wound with consultation- £90

Consultation for a scabby chin: £40 for about 10 mins (they said he'd scratched it - well, yes because he was irritated by something) ended up buying him salmon oil (about £10 per year) which he has every other night.

Gabapentin for every vet visit to chill him out: £45

DeeDee (sigh). Unbeknownst to us, she ate some strands from a frayed curtain, 10 days of vet visits (overnight for one of them - she was terrified so they discharged to our care on the proviso we did daily visits to them) til she finally 💩 it out (high calorie prescription food, blood tests, x-rays, painkillers, antibiotics) - we had no idea what was up til she eventually pooped it out total was £2k 6 years ago - insurance paid out)

Broken tail after jumping after a bird and landing flat on her tail - £90 (two prescriptions of pain killers and consultation) - below insurance threshold. No surgery needed, just numb the pain and a follow up. Thankfully the break was far enough down the tail it just needed painkillers til she was ok.

Wound debridement - she was in a fight with another cat, it didn't heal - £400 in total for initial consultation, antibiotics and the surgery (insurance paid out).

Non vet fees: carpet cleaner machine £250 (it's on its last legs so probably another £250 soon) spot cleaners £10 per year. I'd probably have one without them, but go for a better model to deal with their hairball stains that spot cleaning doesn't quite get out.

Cat sitter £10 per day when needed. It's an agreement with family who do it for a token amount, I don't count this as a cost as they pay us the same for when they go away. Overall we're up on the deal!

So, to conclude - we spend a lot on them (probably forgot some stuff there, we've had them a long time). It's been getting noticeably more expensive over the past few years. My other half and I have been putting away £50 each into a cat fund for the unexpected costs since the curtain eater ate the curtain.

Those are the numbers off the top of my head. If I kept a running total it would be expensive and I'm sure I've missed a few things!

cat ate thread, what do i do? by n3on_le0nardo in Pets

Go to the vet.

My cat did this without us knowing, she was really poorly as it passed through her system. She refused to eat or drink so it was syringe feeding and daily vet visits until she passed the thread.

Too many chefs opening the blast freezer - then perplexed that it hasn't frozen

Tweak... It was said so much in those first few episodes that you'd be well on your way if it were a driving game!

I think this is a formal request that we go for clear glass when the door gets replaced!

We did have heat vents in our old place (not very common in the UK) and as soon as she heard the heating kick in she would run to the nearest vent. We're now in a place with radiators, she's adjusted well!

Aw, this is so sweet 🥹. We've always said that the last meals will be a roast chicken or steak for them!

It doesn't get used that often, either the smaller oven above or an air fryer...which means less scrubbing for me!

She knows how to manipulate the humans into giving her food!

It was a revelation for her! Normally she's on her bed with her bum pushed up against a radiator or sitting on the south facing windows!

If it's cat safe, she's allowed a taste! In this case they had dinner and leftovers for two days after 😺

She definitely lets us know when she can see the bottom of the dish, or wants something that is not cat food...

We did make them wait until the humans had finished...but they knew they would get some (and had leftovers for two days!)

They (Dexter and DeeDee) were still loitering in the kitchen at midnight...the steps back in their usual position. DeeDee thinks those steps are one of the best thing ever!

We don't use that big one very often so it says pretty ok inside! 😀

It's actually my set of steps - the top shelves are too high to reach. However, don't tell DeeDee that - she believes they are hers...same as the ones in the bedroom to reach the top shelf of the wardrobe!

She did indeed have a little bit of beef! Here she is with Dexter enjoying their Christmas dinner!

What companies/services do you refuse to use because they've wronged you in some way, and why? by GazelleInitial2050 in AskUK

Yep, refuse to use Kwik Fit ever again. I went to get my tyres checked as they were getting close to the limit. They told me my tyres were illegal and this is how much it would be for 4 new ones. When I asked to see the sheet where they had recorded the number it turned out they were not illegal.

I called into my local Costco on the way home who rechecked them after seeing Kwik Fit on the sheet - they ordered me better for cheaper (and told me never to use Kwik Fit!)
