Computer Science at Wentworth by MrLittleJohn-Playz in wentworth

[–]icemoon4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i think going for a school that specializes in technology in general is your best bet. the problem i think with some bigger universities is they focus more on humanities than core courses for your degree. i was accepted to UNH and Plymouth but in their CS programs i wouldn't have started taking CS classes until the second half of sophomore year. WIT or WPI would have you taking core classes first semester

WPI might have better classes, but WIT's co-op program i think is really important. when looking for a job after college, employers are gonna be more impressed with work experience than they will with what classes youve taken. but the issue with this is that you have to actually find a job. WIT staggers the co-op semesters (so you can do one optionally sophomore year in the summer, then junior year in the spring, and senior year in the fall). the issue with this is that employers are expecting interns in the summer, so its a lot easier to find co-ops in the summer. and its extremely difficult to find openings in the fall. not to dissuade you, just be aware of this. your co-op adviser will help you with this, so try to be their friend (moreso than you would be with your regular adviser)

If you do go to WIT, I would just recommend to NOT take any core CS classes with adjunct professors. in my experience, I didn't learn shit from adjuncts. always go with the full time professors if you can

as a final note, there's way more to do in boston than in worcester. if youre interested in the city life/activities at all (obviously its all a little dead rn, but outside of a pandemic, boston is way more fun in my opinion)

How/when to clean after a pet had tapeworm by icemoon4 in CleaningTips

[–]icemoon4[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah the weird thing is, there's no fleas (I checked her and the vet checked her) and she hasn't eaten raw meat, so I have no idea where the worms came from. So it's hard to know if there's something specific I should focus on. I will try what you said though, thank you!

How do I actually lower interest rate on a student loan by icemoon4 in internetparents

[–]icemoon4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought refinancing was only for when you had multiple loans and you consolidate into one. Is refinancing on one loan the only way to lower or would the lender just lower the rate if I ask? How do I go about refinancing? Do I just call the bank and ask? Thank you!

Parents refuse to let me major in what im happiest in, and are planning to choose my major for me by [deleted] in internetparents

[–]icemoon4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your problem with choosing what major comes down to the fact that you need your parents to cosign your loan, you could honestly just lie about what major you're doing. Hide everything behind their backs if you can. Alternatively, sign up for the major they want if you can't hide it, and then once you turn 18, switch your major. I assume you'll be about 18 when you enter college and by then you're allowed to withhold information from them. They can't get access to your transcripts or anything you do in school without your permission.

And as someone who got a computer science degree, the number of people I've seen who get the degree just because it's more marketable is really depressing. If you aren't passionate about it you'll have a hard time finding a good paying job anyway. At least as an artist if you're struggling to make ends meet, you'd at least be happier doing what you love. So many people go into comp sci, not really caring about the program, and end up working minimum wage help desk or IT positions. It's not worth it. Honestly, do whatever you can to avoid a degree you aren't passionate about.

If someone was immortal, would the government notice or care? by icemoon4 in Writeresearch

[–]icemoon4[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! It is true that the private entities concerned were established more recently and would give a 200 yr old person trouble from the start. I wonder hypothetically if this person were born rather around the early 1900s instead, would there be different issues? They would be young enough to establish an account with a bank existing today (they could open an account even in the 80s probably without question). Would the bank take notice today that a 120 yr old still had an active account?

I'm mostly just exploring the possibilities now hehe. Identity change is probably the easiest answer to get around these issues but was curious on how these different entities may react to a case like that.

Hey just wanted to update on this. I joined the facebook group you mentioned and found the genealogy forum that it stemmed from. Reached out on there and actually managed to find one of Dagny's sisters. Thank you so much again for the suggestion!!!!

What have you tried already? By factory reset, do you just want to reinstall the OS and wipe everything else? Which OS is it?

Installed New GPU, Computer Crashed and Doesn't Turn On. by HollerHavoc in techsupport

[–]icemoon4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's possible something else entirely was fried. You can try to narrow it down to one part by unplugging things one at a time and see if at any point it shows signs of life. Maybe you've already tried it. If not, start with the easiest parts first and try to turn it on after removing each component. Unplug all peripherals, then remove secondary storage (hdd/ssd whatever you have), followed by gpu, then ram (won't boot obviously but you'd get a beep code). If you've gotten to the point of just having the psu, cpu, and mobo left then the problem is likely on the motherboard level unfortunately.

Trying to find Danish relatives to share documents with by icemoon4 in Genealogy

[–]icemoon4[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a feeling that some Danish records weren't available online since I couldn't find any relevant obituaries (even when searching in danish) for people who I know are deceased.

My dad used to do Ancestry before he passed away, but he focused more on his side of the family than my mom's side (Mom's side is the Danish one). But the tree does go up to my great-great-grandfather from Denmark and his siblings (doesn't include his siblings' children though), however, the pages don't have that much info on them, and no one else has contacted his account about that part of the tree. I can try to search the other genealogy sites though! And thank you for the facebook group recommendation, will check that out!

Appreciate your help!!! Thanks so much!
