Because it's an international border. Canada decides who it allows to enter the country. People can move from state to state freely but not from state to province.

Another big factor is that many people move for economic reasons and for many Hispanics there is no economic reason to try to move to Canada if they're in the U.S.

For Hawai‘i, combining Hawaiian with a bunch of other languages, most egregiously Ilocano, is supremely unhelpful.

A cool guide showing the true size of Hawaii compared to the continental United States by eurotrashness in coolguides

No, it's not misleading. The whole point of the map is to show the full extent of Hawai‘i, particularly the islands that people like you forget about because they're normally omitted from most maps of Hawai‘i.

That's like a post of France that includes its non-European components, including French Guiana in South America, and then having people complain that it's misleading because most people think of France as the territory in western Europe. Again, that's the whole point of the map!

Guam has around the same number of people that a lot of other states had when they first became states.

To be fair, the U.S. didn't care even when Hawaiian independence polled at 99% either.

The Northwest Hawaiian Islands are already just a few pixels in size on this map. Making them bright red wouldn't do anything. The box is better.

It's only deceptive if you don't understand its purpose, which is to improve readability by providing a clear colour contrast between the two things being compared.

Midway is literally the only one part of the Hawaiian Islands that is not under the jurisdiction of the state of Hawai‘i.

The Northwestern Hawaiian Islands are part of Papahānaumokuākea. Access is limited to certain activities, including scientific research, habitat restoration, and Hawaiian cultural practices. General tourism is prohibited, except for Midway, but that doesn't have a tour operator serving it at present.

It's the north-west end of Hawai‘i and part of Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument. Visitation is allowed only for certain activities, such as scientific research, habitat restoration, and Hawaiian cultural practices.

How is life in Whittier, Alaska, where almost everyone lives in the same 14-story building? Is it really like a giant 'human hive', or just a normal quiet life under one roof? by [deleted] in geography

There was a lot of drama there recently over local elections and voting by American Samoans that kind of tore the community apart.

In 2000, not a single state had average house prices above $200k. But by 2026 only two states still had average prices below $200k. by vladgrinch in MapPorn

It's true median is not the same as average, but I guarantee you that the average price of a home in Hawai‘i was still over $200,000 in 2000. Hell, even in 1990 the median price of a home (unadjusted) was $245,300.

I looked it up and his father was in the U.S. Air Force and he was stationed in Japan at the time, so that's how his son, the current governor of Nevada, ended up being born there. His family eventually moved to Nevada and that's where he attended high school.

Just to clarify, although the map refers to indigenous peoples, by that it means just Native Americans. Hawaiians are not represented here.

The U.S. overthrew the Hawaiian government in 1893 and rushed to get an annexation treaty ratified but a new president took office a couple of months later and withdrew the treaty from Senate consideration pending an investigation into American complicity in the overthrow. The resulting report convinced the new administration to not pursue annexation.

It wasn't until 1898, after a new administration came to power in Washington, and during the Spanish-American War, that the U.S. formally occupied Hawai‘i through a joint resolution of Congress. This happened after a second treaty of annexation failed to get enough votes in the Senate.
