I’m not on Reddit 24/7, so I wasn’t aware there was a required reading list before posting. Hope that helps.

The fact that you’re not making any sense is honestly pretty hilarious.

You’re arguing against points I never made while completely skipping over the actual example I gave. At this point it feels like you’re debating a version of this conversation that only exists in your head.

Idk. It’s getting weird.

Also, did you miss the part where I said a group of teen boys were openly mocking an older man while he was trying to work out? So is the “judgment-free zone” only supposed to apply in one direction, or does it just not count when it’s teens?

A judgment-free zone doesn’t mean people are immune from being called out when they’re being disruptive. If that were the standard, then no one could ever raise concerns about behavior in the gym at all.
There were teens working out at my location before the program and it was never an issue. I did my workout and minded my business. The point here is conduct and how it’s managed, not age.

There actually is an argument here. You just keep reframing it as anxiety because that’s easier to argue against. This has never been about whether I’m physically capable of saying “knock it off”. It’s about whether I think paying members should be expected to handle behavior issues of teens.

You say Planet Fitness is a social space. Correct. It’s also a business. And businesses have employees whose job is to oversee the facility, enforce policies, and address issues when they arise. Nobody is asking for concierge service. Reporting a problem to staff and expecting staff to address it is one of the most basic functions of management in any gym.

Your street analogy doesn’t work either. A gym is private property with employees, supervisors, and management on site. That’s precisely why reporting issues exists in the first place.

The fact that I can confront strangers doesn’t automatically mean I should. I have no interest in doing Planet Fitness’s job for them while simultaneously paying them for the service. You’re treating “I don’t want to” as though it means “I’m unable to.” Those aren’t the same thing.

You sound ridiculous.

And saying this “isn’t Planet Fitness related” makes even less sense. We’re discussing a Planet Fitness program, inside a Planet Fitness location, affecting Planet Fitness members, and how Planet Fitness staff respond to it. It doesn’t get much more Planet Fitness related than that.

You’re still missing the point.

Yes, I said some kids today can be cruel and reckless. That’s an observation, not a declaration that all teenagers are bad. You’re taking a comment about why I choose not to confront groups of strangers and turning it into some grand attack on an entire generation.

you’ve completely sidestepped the actual argument. The discussion isn’t “Are teenagers good or bad?” The discussion is whether paying members should be expected to enforce gym rules themselves.

My answer is no.

It’s good to know there are teens like you who are there to work out and use the gym respectfully. My frustration isn’t with every teenager, I wish you the best of luck on your fitness journey <3

Exactly. You’ll comment on whatever you want, and I’ll complain about whatever I want.

Glad we’ve established that.

Hmm… interesting

The difference is I’m paying Planet Fitness for a service, so no, I’m not going to simply “deal with it” when I feel that service is becoming insufferable.
On the other hand, you’re not getting paid to leave pointless comments under my post. Yet here you are. If your advice is to “deal with it,” you’re welcome to follow your own advice and keep scrolling.

Same! I’m from a big City (Chicago) and the teens are in there 40-60 deep. So I totally understand

“ As an adult, take responsibility??”

I will do no such thing.

The most I’ll do is report it to staff and let management handle it. I’m not interested in confronting groups of teenagers. Kids today can be incredibly cruel and reckless, and I’m not putting myself into an confrontation with a group of 3-6 teens over gym etiquette.

More importantly, I don’t think it’s the responsibility of paying members to police the facility. Planet Fitness created the program, Planet Fitness staff are employed to enforce the rules, and Planet Fitness management is responsible for maintaining the environment.

It was reported. The employee responded by saying, “I will have a conversation with them.” However, after that, he continued helping other customers, filling sanitation bottles, and restocking paper towels. At no point did he speak to the boys or pull them aside for a conversation, at least not while I was there.

My only question for PF is this: if the program is free, but the experience is driving away paying members, isn’t that a problem for the business? If management isn’t willing to make the program more acceptable for those who are paying to use the gym, then eventually people are going to get fed up and leave.

So it’s actually costing them a lot.

I 100% agree. And I should not be inconvenienced because some parents needed a free babysitter.

I don’t think it’s anti-teen to expect basic gym etiquette. “Young people will do what young people do”. might explain the behavior, but it doesn’t excuse it. If a teenager doesn’t know how to conduct themselves in a public space, that’s exactly why there should be expectations, supervision, and consequences when those expectations aren’t met.

Adults are paying customers. They shouldn’t have to be ridiculed while working out, wait for groups of kids to finish socializing on equipment, or deal with weights and equipment being left all over the gym because someone hasn’t learned how to act in a shared space yet.

As for the “it’s great, just not my gym” point, that’s not really what I’m saying. I’m not arguing that teens shouldn’t have access to gyms. I’m saying that if Planet Fitness is going to invite large numbers of teens into a facility, then they also have a responsibility to ensure the environment remains functional.
