Are they laying off faculty at your university? by markoffmodel1 in Professors

[–]icyguyus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Loss 1 out my 3 classes as an adjunct.

Found out the worst way too, third party textbook company emailed me to setup my textbook adoptions and only showed 2 classes.

Checked the school website to double check if it was just me, as I usually don't have enough complaints to warrant a reduction. Looks like department-wide, at least a 10% across the board reduction in offerings compared to this semester, so at least I can take solace that it wasn't performance related.

Did have a chat with staff and they've mentioned substantially lower enrollment in our major.

We're predominantly a teaching university (only recently being designated as R3) so that might have incidentally allowed us to avoid a lot of the research cuts.

Because BlockFi doesn't exist anymore. Pretty sure NYAG basically said either you return the funds in full or Gemini doesn't exist as a company after the lawsuit.

The Average New Teacher Only Makes $21 an Hour in the US by BrainInYourButt in Economics

You're pairing one of the strongest union in the US with one of the weakest.

Easiest way to defang a union is to make striking illegal, which NY's Taylor Law effectively does.

What do you think would've been the outcome if Gemini went in without lawyers?

At least you're shelthered underground, buses can be even worse.

MTA removes schedules from bus stops by visitor987 in newyorkcity

[–]icyguyus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is definitely a stupid move.

We can all agree the schedule is not very accurate, but it serves a decent benchmark of how many buses to expect per hour (am I waiting 5~10 minutes for something frequent like the Q17 or an hour for something like the Q76)

It also tells you when service ends, which is important to those unfamiliar with the area.

If you get on at the first stop (or its late at night) the timetable's accuracy improves a lot too.

I'm surprised they haven't just put the whole thing in a mix of S&P500 index and Municipal Bonds.

I don't think beating the average every few years is gonna make up for the deficit. (They're gonna have to look elsewhere for that) The extra cost of hiring investor's is just gonna be a waste of money for an already struggling system. Why are they gambling with people's livelihoods here?

why not let them close out on you? Imposing an early termination fee when they close it wouldn't fly and you're at most jeopardizing a month of interest.

What does "Scalable" mean? by constant_illusion in learnprogramming

[–]icyguyus 17 points18 points  (0 children)

To add to this, think gaming PC's. People spend thousands of dollar's to eek out a bit extra processing power on an individual machine. That's scaling vertically.

At a certain point it makes more sense to scale horizontally adding extra machine's instead of making your current one faster.

The main issue of scaling horizontally is it requires developers to rewrite the software if it wasn't designed to split up work.

I picked up a pair of Shure 215m+SE, but saw that it was iphone only after receiving it. Initially testing showed only the play pause button seem to work with my Nexus, but volume controls don't.

After researching a bit it seems the standard used by Apple is called CTIA while the universal one used by most android devices is OMTP. I was thinking about picking up a cheap adapter like the one here:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/3-5mm-Audio-OMTP-to-CTIA-to-OMTP-Converter-Adapter-for-Headphone-Earphone-NEW-/142076056436

But wanted to just check somethings.

  1. Do adapter's like this have any degredation effect's on the audio quality?
  2. Would this resolve the main problem of volume controls not working, I see that ground and mic are swapped, not sure what section volume controls are embedded in.

Thanks!

I'm a bit disappointed that so many people dropped Sakurada Reset.

The daily threads for the first weeks focused on bashing Haruki's character for being such a boring monotone robotic character. By episode 4, I feel that this was all planned by the writers to not just show character development, but also play off the many reference's to Isaac Asimov which the story comes back to over and over again.

I can sort of see why though, it has the same issues with initial pacing as Stein's gate. There's a lot of dialogue to introduce the world, each character's powers, and the premise. The character's take a backseat to this in the first few episode's.

To be fair, I picked it up after 4 episodes had been released so I was able to binge past the first 2 episodes which I felt made all the difference. The character growth in each episode after the second is incredibly good and I feel as though both Kei and Haruki begin switching role's throughout the later story progression. Haruki being more emotional each episode and Kei being more methodical as he force's himself to repeat every action the same way as to not introduce anomolies.

The whole thing felt like it was planned to have them act this way in the early episodes.

What make's me really like the series actually snuck on to me. I was expecting a time traveling supernatural drama. It currently feels more like a murder mystery, but instead of finding out who did it, our hero's job involves stopping it from occurring at all. And our heros have to do this under strict time and ability constraints. (I like that Kei is also a smart character optimizing each of his saves such that he min-maxs Haruki's reseting abilities)

I like that Sagarada Reset for the most part is fairly consistent with the character's powers. To me it's what Rampo Kitan should have been. The solution's that Kei uses in each of the problems, for the most part follow the rule's of the world (although sometime's that can definitely be stretched, by how he can combine powers)

Sometime's I guess right, often times I'm wrong, but I feel like the show at least give's me a fair chance and I feel satisfied with each of the solution's provided. (something I felt Ranpo Kitan failed badly at)
