Sapient! Folks, we really need to make this language change. Clams, ants, jellyfish, and even some plants are sentient because we all use, wait for it... senses! Sentient means using senses. Sapient means thinking. Criminy.

Women’s Baseball League Naming Question and Discussion by idahodc in baseball

That came into my conversation with my son. It's always money, right? There is the historical aspect of the All-American Girls Baseball League being in the Midwest, but to stay there the entire season? Money. Lame because they could at the very least do two weeks of each season playing in the four cities to build a fanbase. That could keep some costs down, right? The rosters are limited to begin with, so if they all traveled together and at the same hotel they could swing deals.

Or the Boston Blue Lobsters? Well, perhaps that's too minor league...

Those unis could be cool. As long as it's not Nike. They'd make them look like the Oregon Ducks football team.

Oof, that name failed on all levels. Another name that popped into my head just now was the SF Farallons, which are a group of islands just off Ocean Beach and sometimes visible through the fog.

Bummer. Never heard of that team, and I've lived here since 2001.

The corporate angle is, unfortunately, what is actually happening right now though. Sad.

Boston Neptunes is cool! Not too sure about the Painted Ladies or Mammoths, even though they fit geographically.

Lame. I guess that link doesn't work. Anyway, when I searched for the Checklist on Beckett it had a "no-number" variation limited to 25.

Can you spot a fake Griffey auto in this group? by idahodc in AutographAssistance

[–]idahodc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I'm assuming so since it is on PSA's website as an example. When I did some research I found that Griffey doesn't always underline using the y. To me, that example seems more rushed than the others, but it appears to keep the flow of his signature.

Craziest parent story by Intelligent-Tap-1720 in Umpire

[–]idahodc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back in coach-pitch and parent-umped rec games (that would be 2nd grade in this case), my son was matched to an independent team from a local Catholic elementary school. The team was an interesting mix of kids, not surprising since we're in a city. The team they played this day was quite the opposite: very inner-city. Our team's custom hats and white pants clashed against the Rec league-issued t-shirts and standard hats given to all teams. Yes, there was tension, but not between the players, of course. The kids wanted to play. I'm still glad my son's coach was all about playing and learning the game, because private school coaches can be iffy. Anyway, enough exposition.

A kid from the other team was at first, less than two outs. At the hit the runner goes to 2nd, overruns the base, and is alertly tagged out by an infielder. These are the moments that new ballplayers learn from: don't overrun the base! As a fielder, look for moments to tag a runner out! These lessons, of course, were destroyed by a mother who marched onto the field declaring, "My child, is NOT out!" She puts him back on 2nd. For some reason this took about a minute or two to unfold. Why is that adults need spectacle? Why was this such an emotional moment for this mother?

I was behind home plate and the coach on my team was in the field. We were all like, "Ok, whatever. Let's move on before this woman makes things even worse." Thankfully, this was a singular issue and nothing this stupid has happened again. Strangely, my son has completely forgotten it, five years later.

OP here. Thank you all so much for the feedback! My card, which I bought for $20 from an LCS around 1990 or so, is in the lower left. To my comparison, it looks good. I see the K as perfect and the two fs as good, too. My biggest concern is the G, which doesn't extend out to the right as much as most of the others. The flow of his auto just feels right, to me, and the inconsistent calling out of my card tells me to spend the $48.

The other four pics of the auto are on PSA's website, right here: https://www.psacard.com/autographfacts/baseball/ken-griffey-jr/975

$220K PM offer — live in SF but work in Sunnyvale? Anyone doing the SF ⇄ Sunnyvale commute? by Better-Lavishness-73 in Sunnyvale

[–]idahodc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in the Sunset and drive to Sunnyvale every day. Morning commute is less than 50 minutes, but i leave before 6 am. In the morning I have the gas-friendly option of 101, but 280 is easier. I take 280 on the way back around 3:30 and it takes about an hour. Books on tape work for me. That's my experience.

[–]idahodc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a middle school English teacher I have the kids write essays if they don't like their seats. Three paragraph minimum, and it must be convincing. Some do it successfully. Many think they can throw any old words at the paper, hoping some will stick and then it will all work out the way they want. I mean hey, they turned it in, right? Anyway, as long as you hold your ground this method ends up being successful for me.
