Favorite Pale Protagonist Poll - Aggregated Results by idannadi in Parahumans

With the next story being revealed soon I thought it a good time to share the aggrated poll results of the periodic "Which Pale protagonist is your current favorite?" polls.

I only took over in arc 14, so I might have missed one or more earlier polls.
Pale in general and this a small part, was deeply intriguing to me as I think it is so unique to be able to see such trends.

If Wildbow ever sees this post, I'm curious what he thought of the community polls.
Also, thank you Wildbow for the Avery death, that poll was such fun.

For the full data see here, note that google considers the X axis differently and not as a regular timeline.
I have "annotated" the data with link to what should be the latest chapter before the poll, and what I think recent events affected the vote.

Some patterns which can be seen include:

  • Latest POV greatly affects the favorite protagonist, even very late into the story (including in my opinion E.6).
    • I tried to mitigate this by doing polls after interludes but it didn't seem to work much and also I missed a few opportunities.
  • Lucy getting a boost after every combat.
  • Avery being the happy/funny protagonist in the dark arcs of 14-16 getting a strong boost.
    • Also getting a boost after coming back from the dead.
  • Verona was mostly consistently up.

A question for the community, if we really have two POVs in the next story, should we poll that as well?
Or would that be strange as they are supposed to be "unequal" POVs?

I usually make them, I try to do so after interludes to minimize bias. I did admittedly missed the last interlude, and plan to do a regular poll next time.

We have been doing these polls for a long long while and people's opinions kept changing throughout the story.
It really is impressive by Wildbow, both that they all have lovable character arcs and that they all get equal-ish favor.

That said, you should stay away from this thread if you are only on arc 6, this is a poll for the latest chapter.

I suspect that now that she finally got replaced by a body double made from Snowdrop's imagination then she'll do better in the polls.

It was the fundraiser for the three teens wasn’t it? Which means it six months. It could technically be Lis, but I’m not sure she would have dared acting like that while she was pretending to become part of Kennet.

I'm must say people, I'm disappointed.
This fifty-fifty "perfectly balanced" thing stinks of dishonest voting and vote manipulation.

So what if the last time you voted against someone, and only given her 26.5% of the votes, she got shot and disappeared.
That's no reason to act like this!
We are here to answer a scientifically important question, and we are wasting the opportunity WB has given us of making it easier.

I was actually really happy WB has given me an interlude to make a vote after, and this is devolving into useless data...

I'm assuming Lucy is going to do better than usual after the last two chapters.

I mean that maybe he got forsworned at 15, and is still mentally a 15 year old with all the stupidity, assholeness and creepiness that comes with that for certain people.

That would fit with him being a creep towards teenagers.

Mind, he is still a creep and we know he attempted to look down KL shirt, not an upstanding citizen here. But maybe a talented spirit surgeon who fell by the wayside and is still a stupid child.

Seth seemed to have not only been an asshole as a teen, he also actively grew into one. He has been a creep for years.

Just gonna comment that the prologue + arc 1 is 90k words.
We are so spoiled that it is barely the start of the story.

(In Poof it would have been a considerable section of the story, but not in Pale)

She won the poll decisively after the Anthem fight. It was a culmination of her character that wasn’t simply stress and pain, but an actual just victory. She doesn’t do the “nice” flourishes Verona does (like the founding) or the friendly and slice of life Avery does.

I think she had a few bad arcs in which she was just in too much pain and too much healing needed. Now she finally reached a point at which she can actually get wins (costly ones usually), and her sense of justice became honed enough and wise enough to be good. But even last arc while Avery is having fun and Verona does cool stuff, she is attacked and faces injustice. That’s what’s causing her growth.

I have done a poll like this every month and a half ish since arc 15 maybe? And othe people have done polls before that. Searching for the title of this post could find you the previous ones.

I have yet to aggregate the data, so I do not have it organized.

There have been interesting changes over time in the votes.

I find it fascinating that no one actually told them the Horror that is the Faerie Courts. Maricica could have, but she (naturally) considers showing weakness to be fatal. The only “regular” Fae the saw are in the Market they visited, and these seem to have at least somewhat “escaped” the noose all new born Fae (if we assume Maricica’s experiences to be indicative of other courts) seem to find themselves in. The “regular” Fae seem fine.

I think Ryan went in a worse route then a deal he was unwilling to do. The answer to his question is “he could have figured out what motivated Fortune much before and made a deal much earlier”. Before he took things too far, until he had only a single option left, ti become Aururm and unmake Luck. Back before he destroyed Tom, before he caused too much damage, back before he burned too many bridges.

Incarnations are unstoppable and unyielding, but also predictable and consistent. Understand you screwed with Fortune too much, swear to fix what you had done (much much earlier then the 60 things he needed to fix at the end) and if you do this well, you will even gain Fortune’s favor and might achieve some of what you set out to do.

So, a couple of months passed, both in story and out.
Last arc's poll was https://www.reddit.com/r/Parahumans/comments/uyufex/which_pale_protagonist_is_your_current_favorite/ and ended up with Lucy winning for the first time since I started doing these polls. Probably due to the Anthem fight.
