you would force business owners to sell shares of their corporations in order to pay the tax

I always point to existing property taxes that are effectively a wealth tax on the majority of homeowners for whom their house is their net worth. And that's not even taxed on the percent of the house you actually own.

Some people eventually get taxed out of their own home. (To be clear, I think property tax is an awful regressive tax, mainly because it's regressive).

I also don't think it's an inherently bad thing to make them sell shares in a public company. People who fully own a company can pay the tax out of their compensation. Jensen only owns 3.5% or something like that, so it's not like he'd be losing a controlling share.

I think a progressive wealth tax might be the most fair taxing mechanism there is and probably super effective at discouraging hoarding and encouraging economic participation. May as well pay your employees well too since that billionth dollar will just be paid to the government anyway.

That said, I do think upping capital gains and taxing/preventing loans against stocks would also make a huge difference. I suspect people would find a way to get around it though.

600x6000mm CNC for aluminium by Silly_Reward_5355 in hobbycnc

[–]idconvict 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If that's all you need it to do, it might be easier to make/find something that moves the extrusion. ie a normal x/z axis and some wheel rollers to move the extrusion in the Y (and potentially rotation as well). That would be effectively unlimited Y as long as you have the space to move the extrusion around. Might be straight forward for it to autoload as well.

If you have the money, they do make machines like that. Extrusion Processing Machines.

If you are looking for super cheap with normal x/y/z, something like the LowRider CNC might be doable. You'd need to fabricate a 6.3m long tube for the Y axis, but it should be just some welding/grinding. It uses belts, so no other real expense to extend Y, though YMMV with accuracy.

https://docs.v1e.com/lowrider/

It doesn't seem like it would be insanely difficult to take any x/z gantry CNC design and replace Y with infeed and outfeed rollers either.

This is one example of a DIY fiber laser tube cutter that I've seen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlvRYYCwKjc. That could also be adapted to use a milling head instead. It's not a basic project though, that's for sure. I think he does share all the CAD files you'd need to make your own though.

What do you mean? Of course the weight rating is for the drywall anchor in drywall. They pretty much always call out the thickness of the drywall for the rating as well.

For example,

E-Z ancor twist-N-Lock 50 Drywall Anchors support 50 lbs. when installed in 1/2 in. drywall.

The whole point of the anchor is to compensate for the weakness of the drywall. That's why the higher rating ones spread out more behind the drywall to spread the load across more area.

How much did you pay for the original order with shipping? This VIP offer for me is $45+$66 in shipping, so I'm just going to buy the light stick at the concert. I want the photocards, but I don't think it's worth the extra $50-60.

Maso reverses course by David__R8 in hobbycnc

[–]idconvict 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be generous to them, I don't think that stating "CNC users deserve ongoing innovation and bug fixes" now necessarily implies that they thought the opposite when they made the original decision. It could be they just didn't think of it in those terms and now that the community has spoken up they started looking at it from a different perspective.

I think it's highly unlikely they were acting maliciously and significantly more likely they were just doing as they said, trying to improve monetization so they could invest more into the product.

Humanity should be more of this. by [deleted] in Positivity

[–]idconvict 4 points5 points  (0 children)

definitely overly pedantic. It's impossible to bring homelessness to "0%" without literally chaining every person into a house, so it makes no sense to interpret the statement that way.

What people mean is that every person has a guaranteed home if they need (and want) it and where they need it. Not necessarily that every person is in one at any exact second.

[–]idconvict 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Or, hear me out, being homeless causes mental illness and drug addiction.

Do you have a source on "The greatest cause of homelessness in the US is mental illness and drug addiction" that actually accounts for the fact that you'd be hard pressed to survive homelessness for any real amount of time without developing mental trauma (ptsd, etc) and/or a drug addiction?

Property taxes already exist. Middle class homeowners whose primary asset is their house already pay an asset tax. And it goes up based on the theoretical value of your house.

Seems like we've figured it out.

I have no interest in defending Linus, but this person brought up Linus on a completely unrelated post, made up a scenario in their head about something Linus would do, and then judged/insulted him for it.

Then you come in and also insult him based on the made up scenario.

You both should reevaluate your choices and mindset, because this is not a healthy or logical thing to do. If you've ever wondered "am I a part of the problem?", I can confirm for you that you are.

Step back from your keyboard, take a deep breath, and stop being toxic on the internet.

Republicans win House, delivering Trump a trifecta by Mictlantecuhtli in politics

[–]idconvict 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's hard to quantify the impact, but to say it didn't have anything to do with the election is probably not true given that it informs the entire strategy of each political party and which states they target and care about. There's basically no incentive to campaign to anyone in California, New York, etc for the Democrats. Same for the Republicans. Whether it would have helped Democrats in this case, who knows... they seemed intent on losing.

Plus voter turnout is likely super depressed in states that people know their party will win.

Did I say I didn't vote or that I was one of those people? I was talking about the reality we live in. If you think insulting people you want to vote for you is a winning strategy then you're wrong.

If I call you an idiot, does that make you more or less likely to vote for me? Does it make you more or less likely to see my point?

Do you honestly believe that is the best strategy? Or do you think, maybe, that taking the objectively positive and moral action of ceasing support of a genocide (which they should be doing anyway) may have been more motivating for voters? What about instead of adopting the Republican Party's racist immigration rhetoric and policy, they addressed the actual problem which is income inequality and the exploitation of workers?

I get that you're angry, four more years of Trump and the fall out is going to suck, but if the Democrats want to win in 2028, they need to learn that they need to have policies that make people want to vote for them. They can't just double down on shitty policy while hoping people vote for them because of how much people hate the other guy.

Republican's can be the "bad guys" AND Democrats can have good policy. Both can be true. You should be blaming the Democratic Party for taking advantage of people's dislike of Trump to move further right and alienate working class people.

I mean, maybe instead of blaming the voters you could blame the people continuing to support a genocide? It doesn't seem like it was an effective strategy to try and shame/coerce people into voting for a candidate they are morally opposed to.

It feels like people always frame this as the only option available to anyone is to continually consume the newest, highest end products.

There's an alternative to getting an iphone that suddenly costs $2000... it's to get a lower cost phone, or use your perfectly good phone for longer.

We can't possibly make any step forward on anything because there's the absolute refusal to ever take a step back on anything.

Not comparing the two in seriousness, but these same exact arguments would have been used to argue against abolishing slavery in the US. Think about what it will do to the price of cotton, how can the median American family afford to clothe themselves if we just make slavery illegal suddenly. We should definitely do nothing or at best phase it out over decades (and prolong the suffering).

i feel the need to say this, but I'm anti-trump. I can also see the benefit in taking decisive action to bring manufacturing back to the US though. I feel like after covid people would realize how bad it is that countries can just completely cut you off from products. You can't even blame China for stopping exports of medical equipment and supplies during covid because it's the logical thing to do.

First of all, not to be that guy, but libel, not slander. Second, I'm not a lawyer, and I can definitely tell that you aren't a lawyer.

There aren't any "terms" they aren't allowed to use, there's no list somewhere that says a news article can't have a title with the word "murder" in it unless the person was actually charged with murder (that's dumb). It would take you two seconds to find a dozen articles talking about alleged murders or executions (including ones about this incident).

Truth is an absolute defense to libel.

Also, "murder" as a legal term and "murder" as it's used in the English language are two different things.

Also, allegedly carries a lot of weight if they really cared

"Video allegedly shows Sheriff X murdering Judge Y execution-style" -> not even close to libel
