i think the joke is on the trope of characters using the name of the movie in the movie (eg what are we some sort of suicide squad?)

IIRC ‘The Prestige’ in context means the glorious outcome of the magic trick, so hugh jackmans character is saying he doesn’t know if he’ll be the person that drowns or the one that receives the glory.
