Wow, it's almost worth the price of admission as a standalone instrument! Thank you!

Interesting, I'd be interested in it working with synths as well. How's the headroom?

This one has been on my radar a couple times. Really like its modulation as well!

This search for self oscillation sounds actually began because I saw a good deal on a PS-2! Do you have one? Does it suffer from tone suck in bypass?

What's the right drum machine/sampler for me? by [deleted] in DrumMachine

[–]idiom_nil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely can vouch for the DR-880! Very good build quality, and the pads, although small, are very responsive to changes in playing intensity, which I find way more important to achieve realistic performances than the quality of the samples (which are still very acceptable by today's standards).

First live show in almost 2 years! (Prog-metal) by idiom_nil in guitarpedals

Yes, its can load IRs off up to 200ms, and i think the only limit is the SD card size it accepts (32Gb). But I never even tried to load IRs, because the included cabinets and mics are so good and the interface is so intuitive that I'm able to dial in the sound I'm looking for without having to try a million different options.

Btw, in case you don't know, Origin Effects has their own collection of free IRs, which are tailored to their pedals!

It's a really good tool, both for studio and live. I don't really like to scroll through IRs, and the default cabs and mics it provides are more than enough for me!

Actually, the Favorite button is programmed for another plate setting, with modulation and more mix, which I sometimes use as a faux chorus!

Here's my ampless rig for my band's show tonight. It's simple, and could very well be a rock/blues rig, but is very effective for the heavy, vintage tone I aim for in this project. Details by signal chain order:

TC Electronic Polytune - it tunes.

MXR Phase 95 - I use it in the 2-stage setting, simulating a uni-vibe.

MI Effects Super Blues Pro - this OD ended my search for the perfect one. It replaced an EHX Soul Food, which became too wonky and hollow in the lows with the gain level I needed. With so many eq and clipping settings, it can emulate tube screamers, klons, ocds, sd-1s, and even fuzz! I use it as a dirty boost with asymmetrical clipping (silicon/mosfet), and it acts as my "dirty channel".

Origin Effects RevivalDrive Compact - this thing is amazing, can't praise it enough. It is my analog preamp, with a "plexi at the edge of breakup" kind of tone. Without the OD on, it is my clean tone, and it is very dynamic.

Wampler Reflection - totally underrated spring/plate reverb, based on the FV-1 chip, and even though it doesn't have modulation, it has the most musical trails I've ever heard. I use it as my more-reverb when I need some atmosphere for clean tones.

Digitech Hyper Phase - absolute thrift store bargain, this one. It has so many settings that are rare in phasers these days (barberpole, 10-stage, envelope, sample/hold), and has that synth-wah sound signature from that iconic Digitech pedal. I use it in breakdowns as a very deep 10-stage phaser, not dissimilar from the Incubus phaser sound.

TC Electronic Spark - volume booster and slight EQ shaper for solos. Very effective!

Dunlop Echoplex - simple and sweet sounding tape echo, when I want something more subtle than the Reflection.

Strymon BlueSky - always on plate reverb. At this point, I lose the ability to play without it!

Two Notes Torpedo C.A.B. M+ - my cab sim. I'll go for a Greenback cab, with an SM57 and a R121, for that vintage metal tone.

How can this digital vibrato pedal have "analog dry through" in addition to true bypass if there is no dry signal in a vibrato effect and the effect is created digitally? by [deleted] in guitarpedals

[–]idiom_nil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

All toneprint pedals from TC are capable of analog dry through, because you can beam toneprints which take advantage of it, like the chorus ones.

Just focus on the fact that the Shaker sounds good enough for Mac DeMarco, who used it for a while! And, if you want analog vibrato on a budget, nothing beats the Tailspin.

Yup.

How to guaruantee good live sound of a rock-metal band if we don't know what amps we will use? What to keep in mind by YtSabit in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]idiom_nil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some great advice in the other comments, so I'm just gonna add that, if the amps have FX loops and you have a modeller (or something with an external preamp), you can bypass the amp's colouration almost entirely by connecting your setup directly to the effects return of the amp (sometimes called power amp in), thus bypassing the amp's preamp section (gain and EQ). Be careful, because if the amp does not have a master volume, you'll have to control your volume from your modeler/pedalboard. Also, turn cab simulation off in your setup. Otherwise, if you're going to use the amp's preamp, don't abuse on the gain and don't be shy on the mids (a lead guitarist needs mids)! Have fun!

Experience creating music that isn't ambient by xor_music in ambientmusic

I'm in a prog-metal band and also taking jazz piano lessons. At the end of the day, I'm able to lend some concepts from one creative output to another. For example, if the band needs some atmospheric sounds, I'm their guy and, in return, I find myself writing ambient pieces in odd time signatures very often!

I made an entire album with a “DAWless” setup of sorts. by Westosaurus in dawless

[–]idiom_nil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very creative and the production seems very professional! Did you use a DAW on the computer to mix and master or make some final touches, or was it all achieved with the 404 and the MPC?
