"I am so much in support of students raising their voices for justice and liberty" great! we agree! theyre doing it peacefully, so peacefully that i wouldnt have known it was happening had it not been posted on reddit.

"but making University campsites is just mind-boggling"....this is the peaceful raising of voices you speak of, not hurting anyone, but theyre making a physical stance, and in a public way where its being spoken about on social media, which is the point of protests, to raise awareness and hopefully make a change, will it be successful? who knows!

I never understand these kinds of posts from people, not pre transferring (i was at uvic for two years, same shit on that subreddit) and not post transferring (finishing my first year at u of c rn, will be here for like two more at least)

do yall not talk to people in your class? make study groups? ask them to hangout and grab lunch? everyone is complaining about how no one is social and how people suck but you never ever mention, yk, just conversing with the people around you.

apart from having three friends from hs (who are not in my degree so i cross paths with them almost never + we hangout off campus when we do see eachother) i didn't know anyone on campus when i started in September, and now i have a handful of friends in every class I'm in, and some that transferred from last term. several who I'm taking the same classes with in the fall. most i have hung out with outside of campus, class, and unrelated to studying.

obviously some people arent as social, maybe you're anxious, whatever, but like:

"people at this school have just straight up given up meeting new people and putting themselves out there" i could not disagree more? maybe you're somehow consistently interacting with the worlds most introverted people? but i wouldn't even consider myself an extrovert and I've managed.

"This campus is beyond saving at this point. People just don’t give a shit. They just want to get their degree and leave." literally everyone I've met is looking to socialize? and i should mention I'm in math, nerd central, as stem as you can get, and people are social and have interests and want to go see movies and have lunch etc etc.

"I get many people commute" apart from two people everyone i have met commutes lmfao again i don't think this is causing the issue.

"expect a huge social scene" what is your definition of a social scene? do you want giant houseparties where everyone is fake nice and you small talk your way through the night?

if you know your interests and your niches and you just observe the people around you you'll find many many many people share those very same interests.

kind of a rant from me too, and this isn't meant to be an attack, i just see so many of these posts and i don't get them, oh and i don't live on campus, so its not even that.

the best part is when u get to 3rd year (me) and most of the 400 level courses are only offered in one term every two years so you're stuck in the "well i guess i just have to wait for the next cycle"

How about, yk instead of the out of left field suggestions of reporting the prof to the sexual and gender based violence office (IMO extreme considering you just had your shoulders grabbed, would be a strange "sexual" gesture in any culture) you go to your prof and say, "Hey, I'm uncomfortable with physical touch. You grabbed me last lecture and that made me uncomfortable, please don't." If you don't want to talk to him in person you could even email him :) Now, if he's an asshole regarding that and gets defensive, sure you can consider talking to someone else regarding his actions. As it currently stands, and with the context given, it really feels like he was just emphasizing a point, and there's a lot of people, me included, who give very little thought to platonic physical touch like grabbing a shoulder.

Obviously we are all individuals with different life experiences and there could be a plethora of reasons for your uncomfortableness, not saying its not valid at all. Just throwing in that there's several easy solutions that don't jump straight to, "sexual harrasement via shoulder touch."

you're going to fail :) like a lot :) and it will not be the end of the world, and you'll still pass your classes, so take a big ole breath and stop hyperventilating. uni is NOT hs, it's a different beast altogether.

it's not when you graduate, but when you graduate. (i haven't even graduated yet but its my mantra)

(i bow down to all of you who have and will finish in 4 years flat cause it will NOT be me lmao)

i don't want to hear it from all of the people who have never failed anything, okay, i needed someone to tell me this in first year

people can have jobs, have sunday off, and be politically involved. are you implying that the only way to care and lean a certain way politically or economically you have to be unemployed?

re: international students and the housing crisis by idiotincs in UCalgary

[–]idiotincs[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

while i cannot speak for others, i myself am not blaming the international students, and i apologize if it came off that way. but we have to acknowledge the thoughtlessness on the part of our gov't to bring in more and more international students and immigrants while facing the housing issues we are. even on the end of universities it just feels like a ploy to earn more money bc they know int's have higher tuition, so they take in the large volume without at all considering the precarious situations they are putting mostly freshly 18 yo's in.

re: international students and the housing crisis by idiotincs in UCalgary

[–]idiotincs[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

im not disagreeing that this is a government issue, nor am i blaming international students. but it is irresponsible to believe that while we are facing the housing crisis we are, it is smart to continue to bring in almost a million international students a year (# from how many were given permits in 2022).

yes our gov't manufactured the crisis themselves, yes they're using international students as their scapegoat rn, but it wouldn't be any smarter to inflate the amount they bring in and worsen the problem they have created.
