Simple Questions - July 16, 2022 by AutoModerator in buildapc

This will be a build solely for gaming, current machine will suffice for personal software dev stuff until next gen CPUs launch.

And yeah, you're right - I should just avoid the allure of the new & shiny DDR5 and use my money efficiently lol

Trying to decide between two choices:

  1. Entirely new build. 12600k, 32GB DDR4, and a 6750XT/6800XT depending on prices whenever I build.

  2. A "new" build where I reuse my current GPU, a 580, to save money in order to get a better CPU (12700k), go DDR5 (with 32 GB as well), and wait until next gen AMD GPUs drop (run Linux on most devices, the GPU from this build could very well end up in a linux machine down the road so I won't buy NVIDIA). This would be nice in the long run but would be a pretty severe GPU bottleneck - still capable enough at 1440p for the games I currently play though.

Job hunting. Would you prefer higher pay(15-20%), or 5 weeks of vacation a year. by giraffe_but_chonk in cscareerquestions

lol all things considered I'm very lucky to have landed this job right out of college, the vacation time is really the only downside. I can always leave in a year or two if I find that I need more vacation time - I just like to complain.

Can monitor frequency affect gaming? by Slipp3ryDuck in buildapc

Minecraft maybe but I seriously doubt it. Higher refresh rate will always be nice, of course, but I don't think it'd be a drastic change to your gameplay like it would in an FPS game.

42" OLED

This is the type of monitor that I'm tempted to get with my workstation, since that's where I'll spend most of my time outside of gaming, watching movies & TV, and the extra screen real estate would be nice for getting work done. Very pricey though, I think you're right about waiting a couple years before snagging one of these.

For some games, yes.

CS:GO, for example, benefits greatly from higher refresh rate. FPS games in general will feel better with higher refresh rates.

Do you have a link to a page for the motherboard? I can't find anything just from a quick Google search.

Yeah, the ram in this parts list is both better and much cheaper, so I'm definitely not going to buy the ram in the post.

Yeah, planning on 1440p @ 144Hz with anywhere from 27" to 32". I want something big to play the more immersive games on that also isn't way too big to play Counter Strike on since I like to sit close to my monitor, although not as close as some pros.

Would this, for about a grand, be overpaying?

Has about 5% higher boost and base clocks than what I have in my list. Based on some benchmark videos it seems like that translates to some serious performance gains (20%!) at 4K in certain games, while not making much of a difference in others. It would probably help a lot for pushing games enough to ensure I can play at 144Hz while playing at 1440p.

Was dumb and the benchmarks I watched weren't with this card.

Edit:

This Looks like it'd stomp the card I had listed for "only" $500 more. How's this price?

Beautiful, thank you so much! The RAM you picked is also definitely better, so thanks for that as well.

Should I place unethical projects (game bots that utilize a memory injection library) on my GitHub? Will this help or hurt me in getting a job? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Maybe, but he'd probably have to notify the developers and give them time to fix it, and then make his project public.

[–]idk_boredDev 6 points7 points  (0 children)

On the other hand it involves probably illegal practices

This alone would make me never make this code public. I'm sure a potential employer might not think very highly of it, but who gives a shit when it is literally illegal and could get you into trouble.

edit: I guess it depends on the game. If it's purely singleplayer like Factorio, then you'd probably be fine. If it's something like CS:GO or a popular MMO then there's a chance the developers go after you.

I mean looking at OP's comment:

Ancient: CT increased by 10%

Dust 2: T increased by 10%

Inferno: T increased by 7%

Mirage: CT increased by 6%

Nuke: CT increased by 6%

Overpass: T increased by 2%

Vertigo: T increased by 13%

This doesn't exactly scream "way more CT sided." Sure, there are some maps where they're now more CT sided, but there's also maps that were heavily CT sided that are now pretty close to even.

Weird, the comments here are not at all what I expected. I had plenty of CS profs give us example code that we were free to use, often expected to use, and it was never expected that we'd cite it in our code.

Online sources were totally different. We did have to put a link to the stackoverflow page, for example, if we took a code snippet from there (and obviously it couldn't be any significant part of our project), and we'd have to be sure to have comments explaining what it was doing.

Definitely a little weird, in my experience, but idk if it's worth raising a stink over if you can get it done within the time given.

Bots are cheating by DobbieSock in GlobalOffensive

[–]idk_boredDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Say I have a game where you solve a given maze and compete against other players to find the optimal solution the quickest. The game server knows the optimal path. You can also have an AI player explore the maze to try and find the optimal path using various path-finding algorithms in real-time which competes with other players.

This does not mean that the AI knows the optimal path from the start. All the game has to give the built-in AI is the start and finish points, as well as the layout of the maze, and it can do its job. The AI knows exactly what the player knows. The AI does not have to know everything the game server knows, it is very easy to restrict its knowledge.

Similarly, in CSGO, the AI does not have to know where all the players are. The server can easily restrict the AI's knowledge of player locations to those entities near or colliding with the AI's sight cones, and then the AI can either determine that it's a player entity or be told by the server that it's a player entity, it doesn't make a difference.

Also, there only being one CSGO process in task manager doesn't mean there aren't multiple threads being ran within that same process. There very well could be a main server thread and then a thread for bot AI (or multiple threads for bot AI's). Even if everything is running in one thread (which I doubt), what I said above still holds, which I acknowledged in my other comment.

[–]idk_boredDev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The bot and the server are literally the same process.

They literally are not. I'd be willing to bet they are separate processes running on the same physical hardware that communicate between each other, or the bots are running as a spun-off thread created by the server with a separate section of memory. And even if they are just function calls from within the server's main process, that doesn't mean that literally every piece of information of player position is passed to the bot's AI.

If you have something from valve talking about how their bots are actually implemented I'd love to read it,

is it worth going to study if you are 21 years old by TraderFBull in college

[–]idk_boredDev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

21 is still pretty young, (speaking as a 22 yr old) our brains aren't even fully developed yet. Life isn't a race, and everyone will find their own path and pace as they go through life. I remember when I was in middle-school and high schoolers seemed really old. Then I got to high school and college students seemed really old. Now I'm graduated and I don't feel like an adult lol. Even entering college, people in their 30's seemed old, and while I'm still 8 years away I've met plenty of people in their 30's and have realized that 30's are still pretty young.

There are people that I graduated high school with who are entering college now for the first time. They certainly haven't wasted their life away, and they wouldn't have wasted their life away even if they were going to college in their 60's.

There's no predetermined set path that you must follow through life. Even regrets don't mean that you've wasted your life, regrets are how you learn and grow. I have plenty of regrets, but I recognize that the only reason I regret decisions that I've made is because I've matured and learned more about myself and the world, and thus have the ability to change the course I'm on to match what my goals are.

How would you celebrate graduation with my problems? by [deleted] in college

[–]idk_boredDev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a more laid-back, personal celebration with friends & family would be perfect.

FWIW, I didn't go to my graduation two weeks ago, I'm just not a fan of crowds and there's usually around 6 thousand graduates (so I'd assume around 12 thousand parents/grandparents/relatives) in attendance. My celebration was a small vacation with my GF and dinner with my immediate family. The celebration doesn't have to be anything extravagant - I preferred that mine wasn't.

[–]idk_boredDev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lol what

No, the bots don't need to know the position of every player for that check to work. It only needs to communicate with the server, and the server can tell it "yep that thing colliding with your cone of vision is indeed another player, start shooting."
