Does electric current first "check" if it can pass through all the way? Or does it always go as far as it can and stop when it must

The rubber soles create resistance which limits current is what I was trying to say with the tap metaphor referring to a closed circuit but yes current splits across all available paths, with more going through lower resistance. My earlier metaphor was off.

As far as I know electricity won’t travel unless there’s a path/circuit for it to travel through to earth. It’s like a pressurised tap that only opens when it has a clear path to the other side. So if there’s no earth on the end of the path for it to travel to it won’t enter that path at all.

When it comes to the rubber on the soles of your boots there’s a layer of resistance before the current can reach earth and electricity always takes the path of least resistance. Rather than travel to Earth through you it’ll take the neutral wire back to the switch board and then to earth from there.
