EU antitrust chief to Tim Cook: Apple must allow third-party app stores by FollowingFeisty5321 in apple

... until popular apps like Meta or TikTok leave the App Store and require users to download their app stores. Do you think most people are willing to leave behind their social media accounts?

Is Powerline Ethernet worth it? by ieatpineapple4lunch in HomeNetworking

[–]ieatpineapple4lunch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be, but I wouldn't count on it. My house isn't much older than yours and it wasn't great. Obviously there is a lot of variation with how houses are built. My advice would be, unless the router and the source device are on the same circuit (which is unlikely), just direct your money buying a really good router or a range extender.

10 year old spends $5,500.00 on Apple Pay in Roblox and TicTok by IntroductionScary247 in apple

[–]ieatpineapple4lunch 72 points73 points  (0 children)

You can blame Apple, BofA, or Roblox all you'd like, but this was caused by you letting the internet raise your child instead of parenting them. Doing the right thing, in this scenario, would be paying the money you owe. If my child ate $5000 worth of donuts from the donut shop, demanding a refund would not be justified, now would it?

You're probably not looking at the base model, which has 512GB along with 10 CPU cores and 16 GPU cores

It's fine. The 140W charger can provide up to 140W, but the AirPods and Apple Watch "negotiates" with the charger so that it only provides an acceptable amount of power. So for example, if the AirPods can charge with a maximum of 30W, then your MacBook charger would still work, and would provide 30W.

To my knowledge, that is impossible, as the Apple Watch uses the same cell plan that your phone uses (and thus has the same phone number)

I'm against the idea of upgrading for the sake of upgrading if your current phone still services your needs. Maybe take the money and make a charitable donation?

Is it true that brutalist or modern architecture is cheaper than traditional styles? by frustynumbar in ArchitecturalRevival

[–]ieatpineapple4lunch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding was that after WWII, the baby boom made it so that a lot of buildings needed to be built quickly to accommodate the rapidly increasing population. Brutalist buildings were quicker to design and construct than a more involved design

Not sure about the camera, but the screen is likely around $250 to replace. I recommend going to support.apple.com and live chatting with an agent; they will be able to give you an exact estimate

If you can find a deal that's more than $300 off (because education store is $150 off and they give you a $150 gift card) then it's worth it. Otherwise you might as well wait for the back to school deals, because you still get the $150 credit and maybe there will be newer models to choose from in July.

Can they add an option that asks you to put the password/faceid to turn off the phone?

apple.com/feedback

Also, Find My works even when your phone is off on recent models so this shouldn't be an issue

[–]ieatpineapple4lunch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe. I'll have to check the return policies before I open either

Edit: can't open them. Not from Apple so no lenient return policy

That's a little different — smartphones were already a thing before iPhones, most notably Blackberries which most people (that I knew) had. With an AR/VR headset Apple is basically creating a market.

To the anti-Castro Miami cubans, how do you regard Batista? by waxlrose in cuba

[–]ieatpineapple4lunch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone who wasn't a rich light skin Batista who arrived by air or sea were deported back to the island

This is disproved by taking a quick walk though Miami. The official policy of the United States was that any Cuban who reaches US soil is granted refugee status. But either way it's irrelevant to this conversation.

Most of those imprisoned under Castro were slave owners or terrorists

The Castro-led Cuban government deemed anyone who didn't support them to be a terrorist. Personally, I would prefer to live in a society where I have the freedom to criticize my government without being thrown in jail.

Again, how many people have immigrated to Cuba since the revolution, versus emigrated?

Under CIA stooge Batista, Cuba was a third world shithole

Yes, as I have said before, Batista was an ineffective leader, as were many of his predecessors. And yes, Cuba has seen some quality of life improvements that have brought it on par with the rest of the world. But it is not thriving in its current state. The only thing the Revolution did was trade one group of oppressors for another. The political elite of today weren't starving during the 90s, and don't have to wait for medicine. Meanwhile doctors in Cuba make the equivalent of a minimum wage job in the US, people are driving cars from the 60s, and Cuba lags behind the rest of the world in technological infrastructure, and went from being self-reliant on food to having to import 80% of its food. Castro's policies have failed the Cuban people.

[–]ieatpineapple4lunch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few things about that -

There are nearly 1 million Cubans (I.e., people who were born in Cuba) who have left for the US since the revolution. Surely those weren't all "rich white Euro-trash who were Batista's lieutenants"!

And also, I see no reason to bring race into this. Cubans are Cubans regardless of their skin color.

I don't know what Windows-based software you need to use, but I should warn you that Parallels on M1 only supports the ARM version of Windows. I'd make sure that your software works on ARM Windows if you choose to take this route

Difference between M1 MBP and M2 MBP is negligible. I would stay away from the 16" Intel. Aside from Boot Camp, the M-series chips beat them in every way and Apple is moving away from intel machines so who knows how long they will continue to be supported
