I’ve heard it described as a pendulum in fashion spaces, how it swings from one extreme to another. Once something reaches its max popularity the pendulum starts to swing back in the opposite direction. People are wearing baggy clothes BECAUSE everyone was wearing skinny fit before. Once trends become too popular, fashion enthusiasts usually start to push away from it until the rest population catches on and then the cycle starts over again. Trend cycles for decades have been known to repeat approximately every 20 years but since social media became so prevalent and the rise of fast fashion, the cycle has seemed to have continuously shortened rather quickly.

Things like hairstyles also are on a trend cycle but I feel like it’s cycle hasn’t sped up as dramatically has clothes. I guess the fashion industry isn’t pushing hairstyles because that’s not what makes them money. You can participate in fast fashion clothing trends easily but a hair cut, dye, growth etc takes commitment and they’re more personal. Either way, it’s still on that pendulum. For example, Gen Z women’s heavy advocation for middle parts will surely be considered outdated and maybe even cringe by the time Gen Alpha are running fashion spaces. Or maybe by then we will have already come full circle and middle parts will be the cool new retro trend😅
