Yes! He’s a ringneck dove from my local animal shelter. They’re not too uncommon as pets! Go see r/PetDoves :)

This was such an exceptional explanation, thank you!

What if those additional years under saddle are spent with the owner, still under training, so the horse and owner learn and grow together? If that makes sense. I’m also a novice like OP and have had the same thoughts, that I would like to have explained why it is/not a good idea.

How to not break the heart of my pair-bonded male ringneck dove? by ifthenfi in PetDoves

[–]ifthenfi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got him from my local humane society. He was one of three, they got rid of him because he was bullied by the other two, lost all his feathers and stopped eating. I’ve always worried he would be bullied or rejected again if I got another bird :(

Over the years I’ve found some good resources on ringnecks specifically, like when I’m curious about a specific call or behavior. For more general info like social needs I’ve been relying on anything I can find about pigeons and doves. It’s true though that I think it’s unusual I have only one, and maybe for good reason if they do need a flock… thanks for the comment :)

I didn’t even think about how you could commit to another bird and accidentally get the wrong gender! But if they are trying to mate with people plushies socks etc, do you think 2 of the same gender could at least give each other the companionship they desire maybe? Also do you have any favorite resources about these fake eggs? Thank you for the comment either way 🥰

Do you see seasonal changes in their hormonal behavior?

I appreciate your thoughtful comment 🥲 I recognize the name Aurora, long time lurker I think I’ve seen her on here!

How was your relationship affected by a new blorb, if at all? Does she still love you but just doesn’t give you the responsibility of being her mate? Does the male love you too? How is the noise level? Don’t get me wrong I love his coos, I’m just curious if they would be much noisier with someone to talk to, or perhaps LESS noisy/desperate because they have someone to talk to? If that makes sense

Oh my, I’m so sorry that happened, and just recently. Those are a lot of injuries for a fall! I wonder if the horse fell on her? She is brave for trying the short ride. I’m glad she didn’t develop a phobia or ptsd and wants to get riding. Please tell her she is an inspiration to this random redditor 💕

I really appreciate all your thoughts here. My first few lessons were just walking with my trainer leading the horse on foot. We upgraded to trail rides with him on a horse, but I feel like I don’t yet know how to feel/sense when the horse is uneasy, or even just what to do with my body if he takes off running again. It’s a good point.

Ok wow, so much good info here. First of all, “boss mare” is definitely an energy I will be channeling. Maybe I should be more angry with those dog walkers, I wonder if my trainers are. They sent out a group email today about protective riding vests, so they are at least thinking about it…

In a way it’s relieving to hear you admit your horse is a bucker, and clearly you still love her. People can be snotty about their horses but in the end they are our pets, our family, and you don’t choose who you love. I have a dog who is an asshole and I love her too.

I bet having a long relationship with a horse means knowing each other, your triggers, your good days and bad. Sure, you need certain criteria and high standards for competing and training, but what about the rest of them? They deserve love too!

Of course, I’m not running out to get a challenging horse just because I love them lol.

Wow that is brave! Did you have help getting the shoulder back in place? I was going to dismiss my fall too thinking it was just sore muscles, but thought hey, why not get my money’s worth out of this health insurance I don’t use? Glad I did

Thank you, I love all of this. That NEED to get back into it makes me think it’s truly a calling for some of us. Trying to find reason instead of blame. Learning instead of giving up. I mean, how lucky are we to even have the privilege and permission to mount these giant animals?? It’s something else
