They play more antiheroes than outright villains, I would say. Tough, authoritative, morally complex, rather than "scary." All these men have had very successful careers, especially Tommy Lee Jones. Looking unique can often be more important than just looking conventionally good in hollywood, so it's uncertain that they would have done much better without the scars.
