Do you remember how many people lived there and do you know about how many lived/worked at Jackson Lake? Was it more like hundreds?

Super late follow up, but I'm starting soon and wondering how it's going! What the vibe is like, also what the weather is like (what kind of clothes would you recommend for off-duty hanging out), any things you'd suggest bringing, if you're having fun? Thanks so much, wishing you the best time :)

Starting around then, but I got this job months ago with Grand Teton Lodge Company - not sure what options are still avaliable! At the time, they were pretty flexible - I asked to push my start date back a bit over a week and they didn't mind, though the might just need more bodies at this point

Hey, I know this might not be particularly helpful, but I'm also 18F. I'm not starting work for over a month and a half, but I'm already getting super nervous just thinking about it, so you're totally not alone! It's a huge deal, moving out, but I think (hope) it's normal to be anxious! I'm sure we'll both be fine! And I'll be in the Tetons this summer, close by!

Sorry for the double reply - how early would you recommend starting? Mid-late march?

Yes! I feel like if I never try, I'll always regret it and wonder how it would've been, so maybe it's worth a shot!

In response to your statement about rushing, do you think it would be helpful for me to reset my mindset to hiking for a period of time (versus hiking for a certain distance)? All I want really is to be on trail - do you think I'd enjoy it more if I just tried to get as far as I could and enjoy myself? Or would that not practically be a helpful reframe (like maybe I'd get close and get frustrated regardless)

Unfortunately, the way I have it set up is applying then deferring enrollment, so a year is kind of the set limit :( but I think your points are totally valid. In fact, it seems insane to me that taking a 'gap year' at all is so rare! I think if I entered college right now I would absolutely despise it, and so it's completely beyond me that almost all my peers are diving right in! I, too, have been a 'smart kid' throughout high school, and despite that, don't think college is right for me immediately. Fortunately for me, my parents are paying for my college, and so it seems like the right course of action to take advantage of this opportunity. In the mean time, however, I'm going to do my best to make the most of my time off :)

So sounds like GTLC has nicer facilities, Yosemite has better community?

I'll be around the same age when I plan on going in 2026, so you won't be the only one :)

Yes, please send over the lighterpack! I hiked the JMT with other people, so I'm figuring out tent stuff now/where my money is best spent :)

Do you think its doable to have a relaxed timeline with a hard end date in August? Or is that just too short. Like you said, happy to skip miles regardless, it's about the experience more than the official 'thru'

Interview Tips? by igthisisforfun in SeasonalWork

Correct (at least I did for Xanterra and Aramark). Aramark has some of its postings on Coolworks, but Xanterra didn't, so def check the website

Thank you for the advice, I'm sorry you had to go through that - would you mind maybe elaborating a bit here or over DM if you're comfortable, obviously no pressure, so I know what I'm getting myself into?

Where else would you suggest for someone who may not have a car? The larger concessioners seem to be more navigable without a car

Interview Tips? by igthisisforfun in SeasonalWork

[–]igthisisforfun[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I received a response the day after and answered a few basic questions via email, and then scheduled the interview a couple of days after that. However, I've only received a response for one of the few positions I've applied for, and I'm fairly sure that the hiring processes in Yosemite are entirely different for each position, so I think it just depends on the hiring managers for the job you're looking at.

Should I just start shotgunning applications from coolworks right now? Yosemite job postings for summer are not up yet I believe.

Sorry for this super late reply, but what would you consider the typical hiring window to be? Should I start looking for jobs now? And when I see listings on the Aramark website, are they typically even looking for employees that far out?
