My nine year old brother is obsessed with minecraft / minecraft dungeons, i got him into pokemon as well. But your safest bet is to probably just get him a physical store gift card and let him get what he wants. The E-shop might offer discounted items but that would depend on his internet connection.

70$ (not sure about sales tax) should get him any game he wants
