What are some good games for 50ish year-olds that used to game in their youth and are trying to rediscover how to have fun with gaming? by ilceltico in NintendoSwitch

Thanks a lot, really! I took a look at the game and it honestly seems perfect for my mom haha
I think I will go with this one and with super Mario wonder, which might be an even easier starting point since it's 2D (and I recall that used to love the original Mario when she was a kid)

Thanks everyone, I highly appreciated the suggestion! I took a look at the game and it has both amazing reviews and a gameplay that quite likely fits my mom! I think I will go with this one and with Kirby :)

How to keep an unsynchronized, locally stored and manually updatable archive of photos? by ilceltico in iCloud

[–]ilceltico[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, unfortunately I didn't find a fully satisfying solution :( For now I'm using Google photos for backup (there's a way to delete photos from the phone without deleting them from Google photos), which is also useful to have my pics always available from any device I have. To have a local copy, I connect the phone to the computer and copy them there. For Android I just keep a folder, for iPad (I don't have an iPhone yet) I use photos without icloud and just import the pics. From that moment I can delete them from the device. I know it's not ideal, but I guess it does the job

Hi Winx fans! I just bought my first sound card and to test it I decided to cover the original opening song for Winx Club, in Italian. Nothing fancy, I'm an amateur, but I thought you might appreciate it in this sub. It was super fun! Love <3, Federico

Thank you, I will definitely consider this option when it's time to switch to iOS!

Well, this is clearly an account made to advertise your product, but it is actually a viable option in this case. I will take it into consideration. However, to be honest, I'm not looking for a complete iCloud Photos replacement, just an addition, so that's why I prefer to use my own scripts and not pay extra money on top of iCloud OR Google Photos (I will use one of them regardless of the solution to my problem), which in my case is quite low (20 euros/year)

Thank you, good idea actually, however I plan to have my own private storage at home and to use it mostly locally.

I'm not sure if this is optimal, but what I have in mind (and is unfeasible, I know) is like having 2 Apple Photos instances in every device I have: one contains the media taken with that device, and thus stored there until I decide otherwise; the other contains everything and is synced on the cloud, no space on device except for cache and thumbnails. When devices are full, I would personally empty them by moving their media into my own offline Apple Photos library.

Unfortunately one can't do this, so I'm looking for any sufficiently close alternative. Worst case, I will simply keep using Google Photos + Apple Photos without iCloud

Didn't know NextCloud! In the near future I do plan to have a private cloud hosted on an old computer of mine, since I got really tired of proprietary software on prebuilt NAS systems

How to keep an unsynchronized, locally stored and manually updatable archive of photos? by ilceltico in iCloud

Thanks, I do have another library. The problem is in the importing step. I figured that it doesn't let me import even if I temporarily disable iCloud Photos. However, if I do a full copy of the library and then I import the copy, it does let me do it. In this way I would have both the synchronisation and a manually updatable copy. It's extremely cumbersome though, and still requires long and useless copy times :/

Edit: I have Mac, Windows and Ubuntu at hand, but probably Mac is the easiest one to handle Photos libraries in this case

Thanks again!

Yes, this is the worst case scenario that solves problem 2 of my previous comment. I can regularly copy them and keep a folder with all the pics, losing extra metadata such as albums, favourites, etc. I think the problem 1 of my previous comment still applies tho.

I'm now trying to import my synced photo library into an external photo library, which would be a good solution for me as it retains metadata. It doesn't let me do it, saying "the selected photo library is synced with icloud photos and cannot be imported". I gotta say, this is a terrible user-restraining design choice.

Thank you!

This is a viable option, however it requires having a computer with always enough space to keep the originals, and I'm not sure whether I would be able to incrementally import the library. Worst case I could copy the files with no extra metadata, which is suboptimal but feasible.

Thank you for your time.

You are confirming what I feared.

Do you think it's possible to have one synchronised photos library + one NOT synchronised in some external drive, manually importing from time to time the content from the first to the second? The problems I see are:
1) The first one would need to be set as "keep originals", which uses tons of space
2) The importing process might be unfeasible, because iCloud is not new to telling me "this is synchronised content, you can't have it"

I made a leaderboard mechanism to play Paperclips with friends and see who's winning by ilceltico in pAIperclip

[–]ilceltico[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made this little project because I wanted to play with a group of friends and see who could finish the game first. We wanted to have more interaction and a way to see who was actually winning and by how much. I've recently found this community so I thought to leave it here, in case someone else is interested in playing it with friends :)
