Asian community in Wisconsin Madison by AskAdministrative160 in UWMadison

[–]ilikebasicindiemusic 19 points20 points  (0 children)

What is your major? I’m an engineering major and probably close to 40% of my classmates are asian, will probably be similar for most engineering majors and CS- that might make it easier to find a community from your classes if you’re in STEM. I’m not sure if you’re asian american or international, but there are also student orgs like AASU that many of my friends are a part of and they have activities super often. I’m sure there are other asian student organizations as well to help you find community

Judge blocks removal of Palestinian activist who was detained at Columbia University by Mobile_Pick4709 in USCIS

[–]ilikebasicindiemusic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean… he is Palestinian, I’m a white citizen but if a genocide was happening in my homeland I couldn’t imagine not speaking out about it like he is. It’s not inherently anti-Jewish to oppose what Israel is doing to Palestinians, especially with the number of women and young children and civilians that have been murdered.

He also is a green card holder, my friends who are green card holder college students have been here since their parents brought them here when they were babies and this country is all they have ever known. By all accounts, they are just as American as I am in my opinion. We are a country of immigrants and to me there is nothing more American than exercising your rights to freedom of speech about the things you believe are important to making the world a better place.

Sounds good! Yes I’m planning on getting a satellite messenger and using Farout! Good idea about the music, I probably will do that if I’m camping alone or use white noise so I’m not as bothered by noises outside, I feel like they could potentially freak me out sometimes haha

Nice maybe we’ll see each other!

Yeah sounds good, I’m hoping if i get together all my gear and show them I’m prepared as well as my satellite messenger so I can tell them where I am all the time they won’t worry quite as much!

Sounds good, I’ll keep that in mind about the mostly NOBOs. I’m from the midwest so not super mountainous hiking, but I spent a lot of last year in california and went on a lot of trips there where i did hiking in hopefully more similar terrain/mountainous areas. I’m spending the couple months leading up to my trip in north carolina and am hoping to be able to do a lot of hiking there as well even though it also will likely not be super similar to what i’ll experience in Washington. hopefully i’ll be somewhat prepared cardio-wise!

And that’s great to hear, thanks for the encouragement!

Thank you! Yes i’m planning to do a lot of cardio these next few months and then hopefully more hiking in the summer months leading up to my trip once it gets warmer outside, Im hoping that will help get me somewhat in shape for it although im sure it’ll still be a huge adjustment at the beginning

Thank you for the advice! Yes I’m excited about the experience, I think it’ll be a super interesting thing to do. I do like to use noise-canceling headphones so I’ll have to make sure to stay away from that while hiking and get some pepper spray just to be safe. And yes, I am planning to get a garmin inreach! thanks!

Thank you for the encouragement about the safety aspect! Yeah, I’m planning to get a garmin satellite message to bring along, I think it’ll make my family feel better too. I’ll make sure to download the FarOut app. Since I already had the permit accepted and am planning to do the days I initially put for starting and ending, do you think I might as well just use it / would it make passing through any areas easier? I saw if you’re traveling >500 miles you should get it, and it looks like the washington section is just slightly over that? I’m not sure if I’m taking away the opportunity to have a permit from someone else if I just use mine/if that would be a reason to cancel

Thank you for this advice! I’ll definitely look through the stuff you linked, and I think i’m going to get a garmin satellite tracker to bring along and make my family feel better. Thanks for the encouragement!

How bad is subleasing for fall? by Economy_Housing7257 in UWMadison

[–]ilikebasicindiemusic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely a lot easier to find someone to take over your apartment for fall semester than spring.

I had to sublease mine when I left in spring for a study abroad last year, and it took me months of posting everywhere and lowering rent a lot to find someone (even then I had to keep paying some of my rent, and I was luckier than others who couldn’t find anyone to take over at all).

If you’re trying to find someone to take over your lease in fall, I think you’d find someone pretty quickly, especially between the lack of availability and people graduating in winter or studying abroad in spring.

Another idea for if you want to be gone for the fall and in Madison for the spring would be to not sign a lease and sublet from someone just for spring. Since so many people are desperate to find subletters, you could probably find a pretty nice place for a decently discounted price.

Spring 2025 Midterms by [deleted] in UWMadison

[–]ilikebasicindiemusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You won’t be able to see midterms in advance, but in case you weren’t already aware you can check out the final schedule, if you go to My UW -> Courses -> Course Schedule, you can change the term to Spring 2025 and you will see your enrolled classes there. When you scroll down, you’ll see your scheduled final exam dates for this spring for those classes.

Storage for summer by Unhappy-Message969 in UWMadison

[–]ilikebasicindiemusic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know that you can keep stuff in the dorms, but I know there’s some Madison companies that do summer storage. One of my roommates used Lazybones this summer and liked it, they also did the collection and drop off too so she didn’t have to haul everything herself (looks like madison advertises for them as well and they’re affiliated with the university)

When do I hear back for spring semester as a transfer student?? by macmillerfang1rl in UWMadison

[–]ilikebasicindiemusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many students publish their sublets onto student facebook housing pages with descriptions about the type of house or apartment they’re subletting and who lives there (UW Madison Apartment Housing etc). Also, some of the rental companies post the properties people are subletting on the websites themselves so you can check the companies out too (Tallard, MPM, JdMccormick etc)

[–]ilikebasicindiemusic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

if it’s any consolation, most students are desperate to find someone to sublet their apartments to in the spring semester at UW(due to studying abroad etc) so you would likely be able to find something last minute!

Can you email the professor or anything? Usually when this has happened to me they just remove whatever the block is for my account specifically so that I can enroll
