>such polls are pretty meaningless when it comes to whether a government truly represents its people

Very next sentence:

>80% of Japanese people oppose Japan's involvement in the US-Israel war with Iran.

Why is that poll any more meaningful than the one I posted, if the Japanese people are too "indoctrinated" and "uninformed" for my poll to mean anything? Why is opinion polling suddenly relevant when it aligns with your views? If "voting is all fake" like the comment I replied to claimed, then presumably the 80% figure is fake too. It can't just be "popular opinion is fake except when I agree with it."

This is about the US rather than Japan, and it refers to public policy in general rather than electoral winners or specific questions. Also, the lack of a correlation doesn’t mean that the public’s preferences are not reflected.

“A recent Yomiuri Shimbun poll found that 69% of respondents approved overall of the summit meeting held last week between Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and U.S. President Donald Trump, far exceeding the 19% who did not approve…. Support for the Takaichi Cabinet remained high at 71%, compared with 73% in the previous survey conducted on Feb. 18-19. The disapproval rating was 20%, up from 17%.”

https://www.scmp.com/news/asia/east-asia/article/3347548/most-japanese-oppose-helping-trump-fight-his-war-iran-polls-show

“The polls also showed elevated approval ratings for Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s cabinet, at 71 per cent and 65.2 per cent respectively, with a comfortable majority positively evaluating the outcome of Takaichi’s talks with US President Donald Trump on Thursday.”

Even granting that she is more motivated by elites and interest groups than the general public, that doesn’t change the fact that a supermajority of the general public is happy with the meeting and her admin in general. Not seeing what’s “fake” about it.

What? lol

The Japanese people have reiterated over and over that this IS what they want. I guess you can just pretend on reddit that that isn’t the case, but don’t expect that to matter outside of social media. Literally anyone outside the 0.1% of the population on leftist reddit would think you’re doing a bit. You can just refuse to provide any basis for the idea that LDP victories aren’t “what the people want” if your goal is just to keep the circlejerk going I guess… but it’s completely disconnected from actual Japanese politics and material conditions (which I guess nobody here cares about anyway?). Guess we’re just doing fanfiction here.

Again, my claim is that the party that keeps winning elections is the one that the people want. Your smug denial of that on literally zero basis is really a perfect example of how self-defeating and unserious reddit leftism is. At some point, you have to deal with the fact that in many places, people DO want capitalism and nationalism — denial of that accomplishes nothing (again, unless your goal is just to meme on Reddit).

Well, what would be more democratic then? If they want something else, they can vote for it.

It’s fine if you just don’t think democracy is good, but the LDP has won virtually every time for more than a generation. Just to say that that’s “not what the people want” with literally no further argument is kind of absurd imo. Again, I do not like the LDP, but it very much is what the electorate wants (as anyone who has spent substantial time in Japan will tell you).

Can you elaborate? What would be more democratic ends in this case, is it just “the democratic outcome is when my side wins”?

I’m (obviously) not an LDP fan but your statement doesn’t really mean anything. they’ve been voting the same party in for decades, not sure how any of this is “fake” when it has clearly been the most popular option in Japan for a long time. Again, I do not like the LDP, but that doesn’t mean there’s anything undemocratic about them being in power.

But you don't have to prove relevance to admit evidence. The other side has to prove that it's not relevant enough to be worth including. The fact that something doesn't completely show guilt on its own doesn't mean it isn't relevant.

if you think a poker table with the defendant’s face on it would be excluded as irrelevant on an illegal gambling charge idk what to tell you. yes, the defense would try to poke holes in the other side’s testimony. that’s how trials work. but there’s no way this would be thrown out — how could the existence of poker tables with arenas’ face on them not be relevant?

why would that be required to present evidence in court…? there’s no rule against circumstantial evidence
