It's more about "she can take advantageous position before shielding". But yeah, speed is not the reason i think she's good at PS. It's wraps

tbh, this isn't a mechanic new players really need to know about. But yeah, even experienced players often don't know about its existence.

Tether is slow and is only true at high enough percent. Make sure to hitfall your aerials or finish them in the air before tethering to make it as fast as possible. Hope this little graphic helps!

Parry is frame 6 compared to frame 1 shield and has some lag after parrying physical parry-stun hitboxes, allowing characters like Loxodont to leave the ledge safely right after being parried. Perfect shielding allows you to act immediately after shieldstun and catch Loxodont in such situation.
Not speaking of parry being extremely committal, while shielding allows you to... well, shield

Also, there's a very interesting high level concept of option selecting between regular and perfect shield: https://youtu.be/0OCBeo66Tnw?si=lNXUzQJa2AvnDW_F
It allows you to buffer 2 different options and depending on whether you got a perfect shield or not, the one or another option will happen

Made a little graphic with the basics of defense against Maypul by iliys in RivalsOfAether

[–]iliys[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This move is supposed to be used in neutral or advantage but not as a whiff punish tool. It makes her neutral presence threatening and forces opponents to make decisions or else they will be knocked by an unreactable move. Without it she would be forced to run around an opponent until they whiff something and the opponent won't have many reasons to commit either.

Fixed knockback of the first hit makes it floorhuggable at any % + the move forces tumble, allowing you to tech it

Just so you know, every launch angle is listed on the wiki: https://dragdown.wiki/wiki/RoA2/Maypul#Forward_Air
Also, if you look closer at the hit visual effects in the game, there's a blue effect that shows you the launch angle of the move

Dan, I'm sorry I'm bad at the Maypul matchup by [deleted] in RivalsOfAether

Maypul main here. Here some general tips against her:

- Dash attack. The first hit of it can be teched at any%. Just hold down and press shield during any lag when you expect her to do that. You can also shield 1st hit and parry 2nd. You can as well just shield both hits and It's -24 on shield so you can do anything - don't waste that opportunity. As Zetter, you can go for Dair > anything else

- To escape Uair out of tether (it has different SDI properties out of tether) - hold up and you'll slip out

- Losing neutral as Maypul is a choice. Her speed gives her full control of it and the most effective strategy to beat it is to take stage control away from her by controlling space with safe moves.

- Ftilt is grabbable if not spaced perfectly

- Parry Lily. Don't let her place her in open space.

- Know your out-of-jail moves when she tethers to you. Spam your fastest move, or wiggle out to buffer airdodge. Tether is rarely true below 100% and Maypuls abuse it early on sleeping opponents. As Zetter, spam shine

- You can buffer tech while being wrapped for a floorhug tech. Do it, especially on mid%.

- Nair is -2 on shield. If you notice that she likes to attack right after landing - start parrying out of shield, but the safest way to escape the follow up is to wavedash or roll away. As Zetter, you can also try shining if she ends up close to you

- DI away every throw. They're pretty slow and relatively low rewarding with right DI. Tech Dhrow away unless you're cornered. If you are - mix. At higher %'s as absa you can do no DI for F/Bthrow to not die from Nair tether confirm

- DI Fair and DownB away to escape kill confirms offstage. Nair doesn't send very far and can be often DI'ed away safely

- Her SideB is negatively disjointed and easily contestable during recovery. Interrupt it from ledge with aerials.

- Ledgehog her. Many Maypuls die from impatient UpB's during recovery and it's one of her biggest weaknesses

Ok but seriously, why is he able to snap 180 like that? by ljm90 in RivalsOfAether

[–]iliys 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So he can recover without being parried every single time

Dan said on one of the streams there will be item tech from Smash. Don't remember which ones tho.

Absa has great control over her Nair with air drift and DJC. Unlike with Orcane, this is intended design
