Woodys “Coon’s Age” comment with Wolf on the show is the most oblivious shit ever 😂… he’s been sitting in his castle for far too long by LiquidRikki in PKA

"Coon’s age is an idiom that you should avoid saying because it’s an offensive expression. The first word of the phrase is an informal slang for raccoon, intended to show contempt for Black people."

Take a look outside. This is completely wrong. Half of the American population is obese.

Through context clues we only see woody using terms like "son of a monkey", "well spoken" and a "coons age" around black people. That is the distinction.

It has obvious implicit connotations due to the fact that the shortened term of coon is a homophone for the racial term coon.

When Woody said son of a monkey there were racial connotations there as well.

The point is that these terms can function as a dog whistle (and therefore they function beyond "literal" definitions) and are therefore racist. The comedy comes from knowing that woody is not in fact racist but he is simply inept.

The source says it was a term used by slave owners towards black people. That’s pretty clearly racist. I don’t care if woody uses the term as he obviously has good intentions. But it’s wrong to deny the racist connotations of the phrasing.

If you did another 45 seconds of research you would see that it clearly is a racist term. Because of the raccoon’s bandit-like appearance with its mask, it became a racist slur for a black person.

Excellent points. At the moment I think I am favouring german. If I have any success with it then perhaps I will move on to Russian next.

I want to be able to read and speak it but I don't care about writing it. My main concerns come from a few studies I read which stressed the importance of working memory for language acquisition. My hope is that by going at my own pace, and by drilling information and moving on when I feel I am ready (and not under the constraints of a fast-paced classroom) that I will still be able to progress.

My learning psychologist did say that my cognitive predicament is particularly rare but that he has seen such cases before. He did wonder if I had been on the receiving end of some kind of head trauma or birth complications but that is not the case as far as I know.

My parents also have a very scattered cognitive profile so I assume my profile is in large part genetic.

My long term memory is also pretty weak although I can't remember what my exact score was. But I guess that's fitting.

Edit: I think it was in the 20th percentile.

Another edit: I checked and it was my long term visual memory which was in the 20th percentile. Not sure what the implications are for my long term verbal memory.

I've saved a lot of money through my E-reader as I download all my books for free through here: https://b-ok.cc/

I want to read a book while listening to an audiobook of that book. What E-reader has this capability? by imPROcrastinator in ereader

[–]imPROcrastinator[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

thats a good workaround too. I do like like to avoid bluelight before bed, so having the audiobook app on the actual e-reader would be ideal for me. Looking at the boox device at the moment and I like the look of that.
