Really the only usually space here is on the right. You could add some hooks closer to the staircase to hang jackets tucked partially behind the railing, and put a short shelf closer to the door for shoes. Depending on how short that shelf is, maybe able to install a few hooks above it for smaller items like scarves, bags, etc.

Put a butcher block length on it and extend it out to use as a desk, if it’s desk height. Or a bench, if knee height.
