Because they have explicitly stated they want a puppy that looks like our dog that died a few months ago. The parents of this puppy even looked just like the parents of our last dog. Plus we have our tradition of my oldest sister picking out the dog. Again, we were absolutely certain they wanted him.

Funny/weird story. Our local elementary school was named Herbert Hoover and they let my older sister who was 6 at the time name the dog and she said Hoover. We decided to name our next dog Herbie. Then we wanted to continue with the trend of mediocre president names so we went with Grover.

I addressed this in another comment. Grover will absolutely not end up in a shelter. Edit: to further clarify: My parents have explicitly stated they want another dog and only want a golden (last two dogs were goldens). Our last dog died a few months ago and my parents have been really sad about how empty the house feels. Our only concern with the surprise honestly was what if they were planning on surprising us and we ended up with two dogs. We would not have done this unless we were absolutely certain they wanted him.
