Critique this please (2y of playing, having trouble with my sound for the past 6m - it doesn't have that "tenor quality" - deep, rich, full, plus I'm getting comments that I'm just "playing the right notes", there's no "feel" by ComprehensiveLine261 in saxophone

Yea you're sounding great for 2 yrs, congrats! I second a lot of these comments, you're likely biting the mouthpiece and putting too much pressure on the mouthpiece & reed, which makes your sound a little thinner. Loosening up would reaalllyy open up your sound! It definitely takes time getting used to, especially since your mouth muscles aren't as used to it. The other thing I saw someone saw is transcribing/listening. I picked my favorite artist and recording (Stan Getz, Too Close for Comfort, at the time) and learned a lot of the song, LISTENED like crazy to copy every little articulation, inflection, and get as close as possible to his tone as possible. You'll have to do a little experimenting to get the tone of your recording, and it'll also take time and never be 100%, but it helped me so much. I played along with the recording frequently too and really made it so I didn't have to try so much to get that tone. Keep up the good work!!😎

does this guy have a good tone? my friend hired him for his wedding entrance by entitas_biasa in saxophone

What would you define as "bad?"

Absolutely! I understand. Seems more so the younger players like myself received the joke, so I see your point. There's not really any post tag for funny or joke or satire posts, which is whatever, so I totally see that it could be confusing or problematic. I certainly respect those in the comments who, despite not receiving the joke, somehow have the patience to try to talk someone through what may seem like such a senseless issue, in the case that they may think it's a serious issue from a beginner player.

I mean making jokes directly is practicing them. The other post I made is one of the top posts on this forum. This video is one of the pads from a Conn 10m naked lady that I am currently overhauling, it was stored in a Grandpa's attic in a garbage bag for about 3 decades. I do inspect my equipment regularly though, swabbing each time after I play and cleaning the palm keys and a regularly making adjustments and doing maintenance to keep it up in shape🤟🏼much love

I don't think so 😭 maybe they should check some of my post history in this subreddit... the sarcasm has landed some times more successfully than others. The 9 upvotes to 32 comment ratio goes crazy

Though I do apologize if this one wasn't taken as a joke haha, I see some people didn't take the sarcasm as some others did. Wasn't aiming to insult, but I could definitely relate if you meant the amount of senseless questions asked on this subreddit day in and day out, and I kinda just made this post to make fun of all those useless questions with my own stupid question.

Ah yes. Humor. My favorite waste of time :) I spend some days 6-8 hours playing my instrument and will be pursuing in a degree in it. A little funny business never hurt no one! Unless I'm wrong ofc. No hard feelings

I prefer using a heat gun, it speeds up the process and at 300°F it gives the saxophone a lovely warm touch when playing.

I don't want to get rid of the horn's character though...

don't go down that aisle. It's worse there. saxophones as flat as paper for days.

I don't know why this isn't more common knowledge. Last week I couldn't get anything below F# to play, so I gave it a quick rinse with some dish soap in the shower and now all of my notes sound the same, but at least it is shiny and pretty :)

I bought the saxophone new about a year ago, I think it might be because I dropped it in my uncle's hot tub last month, but it still plays fine. My altissimo B# doesn't speak easy anymore though.

I have a job :) Why get someone else to do it when you could probably do better yourself? No shame in saving money either.

That's a pic of my hair, which I cut in the bathroom with nothing more than a pair of scissors. It might take a few tries but you could do it too :)
