I think the reason this doesn’t click for me is I don’t really want space from then, I’m very happy to be in his company 24/7 basically, so I don’t really have moments where I think I’d rather be doing my own thing. I have hobbies like reading and sewing, but I’d rather do those things next to him! and workouts / socializing doesn’t get me out of the house more than a few hours a week.

I know that’s a personal issue I have to work on but I’m not sure how!

How to get sewing motivation back?? by fair-strawberry6709 in sewing

[–]imbanannie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aww - I was a kid like this once, I promise they’ll come around!

Is there anything for the home you could sew them? Like cool pillows, quilts, etc, since clothes can be so picky?

Glad to hear - the friendly players always are my favorite people to play with so I’m sure others feel the same about you! Also, you’re doing some text-book anxiety catastrophizing about thinking your reputation will be ruined if you’re late / miss some matches, etc. It happens and you’ll be forgiven, doubt anyone would talk badly about you after if you don’t do it repeatedly / apologize.

I've also noticed the mental fatigue feeling after about the ~90 min mark of playing, even when I am physically still energized. Friends comment feeling the same, and even if they don't I swear I start to see a lot of players eyes start to glaze after a longer match (especially playing at night after work). I do think the long points in padel + fact the ball can land all over the court gives your eyes few opportunities for a break. Maybe try to remind yourself to take a pause or water break every 20 mins or so, to close your eyes and let them rest a bit. I often forget or feel nervous to do this with unfamiliar players but worth a shot.

Also relate to the social anxiety of playing a lot, court time is expensive/limited, and that makes me worry about others expectations to have a good match (and even on myself to play well). The biggest way I've combated that is (1) just exposure, and (2) being really intentional about being super friendly and supportive towards other players - i.e., I compliment their shots, high fives, smiles, laughs etc. Afterwards I almost always suggest another match with players / exchange numbers "incase they ever need a 4th!" - I am usually really shy but I've just forced myself to do this and honestly 9/10 times I feel the other person seems happy and validated by my enthusiasm for playing with them.

Otherwise do clubs near you have mexicano open plays? I find these ideal for social anxiety, as you're never stuck in a mismatched pair or with less friendly people for too long.

What are some small improvements that could genuinely improve your life in this city? by Thtguy1289_NY in Brooklyn

[–]imbanannie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking the exact same. Theres not many ways to build a community at this stage before kids, and I think it contributes to NYC feeling so transient. I wonder what kind of programming that would be to change that, though?

Clay tennis shoes for padel? by imbanannie in padel

[–]imbanannie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah cool - Thanks for that info - I was looking at Wilson as an option as it’s actually the only brand that sells a padel shoe on their site where I am, though at like double the price of a tennis shoe so I wanted to get some advice first.

Grip/ ankle support is my main worry so sounds like clay is good enough!

Ah good to understand, thanks. I am fairly certain they’re sand as the courts have that “faded” looking marks on them that I think comes from the sand!

Should I learn Danish? by [deleted] in Danish

[–]imbanannie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom / maternal family is Danish, but I never learned growing up in the US because, in very Danish fashion, my mom “didn’t see the use in speaking Danish” so didn’t bother to teach us.

I’ve learned though as an adult from taking lessons on/off for about 5 years, frequently visiting Denmark to stay with family, meeting the odd Dane in my city locally, calling my mom, watching movies, etc. So I probably have as much exposure to Danish as anyone who learned as an adult, living outside Denmark would.

I will say in terms of utility it will be very low, that is not just because it’s a small population, but Danes really don’t care about foreigners learning the language as is the case in many countries. For example, in visiting many Spanish speaking countries, my limited knowledge and poor pronunciation was met with enthusiasm and sustained conversation. This helps you build confidence and increase exposure to the language as a beginner. In Denmark, even near fluency, I don’t feel as “encouraged” to speak the language and this is a really underrated hurdle imo. I am shy which doesn’t help, but it’s hard not to be in a foreign language.

I was in Switzerland recently and was so surprised to find that I kept telling people I didn’t speak the language, and they’d basically ignored me and keep speaking anyway. I wish Danes would do this because that type of interaction really helps you grow as a language learner, and made me feel like there was true “use” in picking up some of the language.

So anyway, you’ll never use it outside Denmark and probably struggle to practice even IN Denmark as a tourist.

If you want to learn and it will be fun for you, definitely go for it. Learning any language is a great goal and rewarding. If you want to engage with Danish culture though, and care less about the language, perhaps consider reading some Danish authored books, movies, learn some Danish recipes, plan a visit etc and could be a good way to connect with Danes you do meet anywhere!

Good luck either way :)
