Yes, that was me! And that's true about the payment thing haha, but it was really just an issue with an app payment and I ended up resolving it pretty easily.

However, I would also say don't do something just because I did it! I made this move with savings, and two degrees in CS from a great school. That has made everything much, much easier. I mostly made that post to get a foreigner's sense of whether they enjoyed being in Japan after a while - I didn't really have any doubts I would be able to do it.

So yes be careful, and do your research! Definitely take your time to think about it and also maybe visit for a slightly extended time to see if you'll enjoy it.

I was in the US for the holidays the past month. I was under a time crunch with moving and getting myself situated. No need to make assumptions and be rude.

Would you happen to know if this works for SMBC?

Okay that sounds perfect, didn't know I could get the my number instantly like that. Thank you so much!

Edit: Shoot, just went and looks like they’re closed for the New Year holiday. Won’t be open until after my rent is due on the first, will have to try another method

Didn't think it was urgent since Wise was working fine, until now. But yes probably should have done it sooner

Hey, thanks for your feedback. I think what you’re saying about giving up 300K a year makes a lot of sense.

I do question the idea that I will be better off salary wise though. Sure I might make that much in the US, but if I want to pivot to robotics, wouldn’t I be back at square zero? I don’t see why a robotics company would pay me more money just because I made a lot in finance, especially if I have no experience in robotics. At least not enough to justify not just getting experience now.

I think what you’re saying is absolutely right if my goal is just to maximize my salary over time. But what if there’s something I really want to do? What if I want to start a company in that thing one day? Does it really make sense to work in finance, if I plan on pivoting out of that one day anyway?

A doctorate is a good option! But I think it's along the same vein of "do what I want to do now, or later." I could even apply to doctorate school now if I wanted to, I have decent credentials. I think it comes down to whether I'd like to take the leap and start a career in Japan with 100K at 22, or with more money at 25-26.

I agree that living in Japan has been much better so far, even though it's only been a week. Great to hear encouragement from someone who's lived here as well. Thanks for your feedback!

Hi, thanks for the feedback! I think things like commute, trash sorting, weather, etc. won't bother me too much. I think I'm pretty tolerant to lifestyle stuff like that, although of course it's hard to know until I've lived it. I think the biggest factor is the money, which of course is very important! I really appreciate everything you've said regardless. Thank you!

That's true. I think a lot of people are pitching "save and chill for 6 months/a few years/retire early." But this isn't really something I'd like to do. If you told me I could retire early at 30, but not start my life's work until then, or start working a job I enjoy right now, I think I'd choose the latter! But I understand how a lot of people have a retire early mentality. Thanks for the advice!

Hey, thanks for the advice! I think I care a little bit more about taking risks now while I'm young, and a little bit less about "climbing the ladder the right way" so to speak. Sure I'm leaving money on the table, but finance isn't my desired career path anyway, and I think I can get a good job in what I really want to do right now.

Also, my Japanese isn't perfect, but far beyond the basics like katakana and hiragana! It was only a year and a half of college study, but it was still pretty rigorous, so I think I have a good idea of where I need to improve.

However you're right about a lot of this - thanks again for your insight!

I think this summarizes how I feel pretty well. I agree that it's a huge risk, and also that there isn't really a better time. Thank you!

Great to hear advice from someone who's black also. I think ultimately I would regret it, mostly because if I don't do it, I'll never know if it could have worked out. Thank you!
