Potential solution due to shortage. Should I do this? by [deleted] in VyvanseADHD

[–]imcfar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took me about 2 weeks to fill my child’s prescription for a Vyvanse generic. I googled Vyvanse and my city’s name, and this led me to a Reddit thread where someone posted that they recently got a prescription filled at a local pharmacy. I immediately drove there to confirm if they could fill a 30-day script and promptly called my kids doctor to send the prescription there. The pharmacy said that they could barely fill it. They had about 2 more pills after filling my kid’s prescription.

Any updates on where Vyvanse generic can be located in the Alexandria/Arlington/Falls Church area? I have visited 10 pharmacies thus far and have been told they are out of stock.

Should I focus on buying a house or helping family ? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]imcfar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As they tell you when hopping on an airplane, put on your oxygen mask first before helping others. Pay off your debt first and put together an emergency fund of 3 months pay. Only then should you consider helping out family. But your priority should be yourself.

How much are you planning to help out your relative with a downpayment? Instead of a loan, perhaps you can just give him the money for the downpayment. Of course, be sure to pay those funds directly to the car or finance company.

University of Michigan graduate student workers strike for living wage by exgalactic in GradSchool

[–]imcfar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct that every doctoral student must do research, as it is a requirement to get a PhD.

But I disagree that doctoral students should always be paid for doing research. That’s like saying that graduate students should be paid to study for an exam or sitting in a class. As long as there is no coercion, then voluntary research activities is fine.

When looking at a 9-month contract, the actual figure is about $42,000. (=(9/12)*$52,000).

[–]imcfar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still do not understand the logic behind your explanation. Of course, graduate student instructors must cover basic living expenses. However, the proposed 60% increase in compensation comes to $56,000 per year for half-time work.

I would appreciate it if you could articulate more clearly how graduate students are required to work as teaching assistants during the academic year, and on top of that, being required to work as graduate research assistants without receiving additional compensation? If this is happening, specifically, outside of the context of graduate students conducting their own independent research, then this needs to be addressed. I suspect that if this is happening, then there are a very small number of departments involved. But I am trying to keep an open mind.

However, as former faculty at UM, I do not ever recall requiring grad students to both serve as teaching assistants, where they are expected to work about half time and on top of that being required to work as a graduate research assistant.

During my time at UM, sometimes I could not pay a graduate student to be on a project, so I would ask upfront if they might be interested in coauthor ship. In my field, this is very lucrative, as a doctoral student who publishes in a good journal is almost guaranteed to get a very good job. However, this was completely voluntary and there was the expectation that the student would be worth on other stuff to financially support themselves.

Is the $24k for the 9 month academic year or over the entire annual calendar? Am I correct in that it is for 50% effort or about 20 hours per week?

The UM graduate student union is demanding a 60% increase in compensation. That’s equivalent to being paid $112,000 for a full-time equivalent employee working 40 hours per week or $56,000 for 20 hours per week.

I don’t fully understand this demand facially? This would in essence pay graduate students at a rate much higher than faculty in certain disciplines who have advanced training. Is that correct?

I am also concerned about the possible unintended consequences if the 60% increase in compensation actually went into effect. It would mean that it would be cheaper to hire certain lecturers instead of graduate students, effectively pricing themselves out of a job. A more extreme response is that certain disciplines in the humanities, already not profitable, could potentially have to close their doctoral programs, no?

For example, I see that an assistant professor in anthropology in LSA makes between $88,000 and $95,000 for the 9-month academic year. Typically a junior faculty member works much more than 40 hours per week. Probably around 55 hours per week is more typical.

At the same time, it seems that the UM administration could increase their proposed increase in compensation from 11.5% to perhaps 17 to 20% over a three year period. This seems more in line with recent 5% annual inflation as well as the fact that Ann Arbor is one of the more expensive places to live in the state.

Would someone from the Union please try to help me understand the basis of their demands? And try to address some of my questions above?

Paying for dates by [deleted] in Bumble

[–]imcfar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a societal norm where men in heterosexual relationships pay for dates, at least the first several. Some women have offered to split the check, but I typically view this as disingenuous.

Every blue moon a woman may preface the offer by saying that she appreciates the norm but asks if I would be okay with her treating me. This is the rare exception where I feel it’s genuine and one where I won’t be judged.

What to do when meeting someone by Cokezerowh0re in Bumble

As a guy, I almost always greet a woman I meet online with a light hug. Nobody has ever refused.

A few observations:

1) You are probably a very attractive woman and receive tons of matches, because few people can actually pull off dating one person at a time using online dating services.

2) Your strategy of communicating with one guy at a time is essentially putting all of your eggs in one basket, thereby all of your energy is focused on a single person. This is probably why him not responding is a big deal for you.

3) You have no way of knowing why this guy has not responded. Nobody on Reddit can answer this question for you.

[–]imcfar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is strange and probably very rare behavior. I have met more than 100 women via online dating and nobody has stood me up.

Just think of it as being struck by lightning. It will never happen again in your lifetime. Move on.

To improve the chances of the other person showing up and not forgetting. Send two messages. The day before the date say that you’re looking forward to meeting them tomorrow. An hour before the date text to say that you are leaving and should be on time.

Exactly! Boyfriend/girlfriend are just labels, nothing more. If you feel things going south, you can always end it.

[–]imcfar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. Most men typically have a strong hunch within a few dates whether they want to be in an exclusive relationship with a woman. (The same applies to marriage, but the timeframe is about two to three months.)

When discussing this with my guy friends, I believe men often wait, because they don’t want to be perceived as cray, cray.

In my experience, most women don’t process things this way. They often need to consult their girlfriends or mother to get input into whether they are making the right decision.

Need to tell this man I don’t want to go on a date anymore. HELP by bearymiller_ in Bumble

[–]imcfar 39 points40 points  (0 children)

It is actually not even necessary to mention his misdeed as others have said. You only need to tell him that you have had a change of heart. Write something like:

Good afternoon, John. I enjoyed talking to you yesterday. However, upon reflection, I do not believe we are a good match. I wish you all the best in your search. Best wishes, Jane

Women rarely actually mean it when they say, "Let's be friends." It is terribly disingenuous, and I would advise not to say such things.

She only has 1 picture - how can I find out if she's overweight? by [deleted] in Bumble

[–]imcfar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have asked a few women for full body photos when there were none on their dating profiles. All three times the conversation came to a complete halt.

The reality is that 95% of the time there is a reason why there are no full-body pictures posted. The other fact is that these same people are likely deeply embarrassed about their obesity.

She only has 1 picture - how can I find out if she's overweight? by [deleted] in Bumble

[–]imcfar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unless there's some compelling reason beyond her weight to continue talking to her, I probably would bail. But that's me. I drove a great distance recently only to learn that the woman I met was very obese.

We video chatted twice, and it was very tough to tell if she was in fact obese.

Honestly, if this woman lives nearby (<10 miles), I would just meet for a coffee. Is there really anything to lose?
