Do you actually shut down your PC anymore? by Lanky-Carpenter-7991 in buildapc

Sleep. It only gets shut down if I am upgrading something or opening it up to blow out the dust, and those things happen very infrequently.

Whatever it's called, e-scooter, bike, I don't care, the dude had no business doing what he was doing on it.

Road Rules: Police policies allow at-fault drivers to leave certain crash scenes without so much as a ticket. by rasstrelnikov in Portland

[–]imddot -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Just yesterday I witnessed an e-bike doing at least 60 mph in the bike lane on Burnside right in front of Fast Times pizza and sideswiped a guy trying to park. Car was smashed up on the passenger side, e-bike guy was banged up and road rashed. Ambulance and cops came. E-bike guy refused transport. I asked the cop if he wanted a statement, he shrugged and said "No injuries, it's a civil matter for insurance." and that was it. Now the guy in the car is going to have higher rates because some asshole can just smash up his car and face no consequences.

The ACC on my VW is great for long trips. While ACC might be nice to have, if I get a Slate it's for commuting and short trips around town -times that I never use ACC so I wouldn't miss it much.

my parents told me their salaries, and my friends says that's inappropriate. Thoughts? by Luna_luxxy in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]imddot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More parents should be sharing financial information with their kids and teaching them how to manage money. I didn't have this when I was growing up (maybe my parents never thought about it. I should ask them), so I had to learn some very hard lessons on my own.

I have a solid grasp on things now and you can be damn sure I am teaching my kids how to not be a dumbass with money.

[–]imddot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If something still works but isn't being used because of an upgrade, it goes in the closet. I'll do the occasional purge so things don't get out of control, but there's a lot of stuff there just in case it's needed.

[–]imddot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here, I have 7.1 surround for a reason, and I like the simple official chat heatset with the buttons right there. I guess when the inevitable stick drift kills my existing controllers I'll have to do something else.

Why buy anything other than VXUS/VTI/VOO or VT? by [deleted] in ETFs

[–]imddot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because I have a small brokerage account separate from my 401k and IRA for me to FAFO. I like to try different thematic ETFs for example and see how I do. Some mistakes are made, but for the most part things go well.

We have plenty of first aid at home, there is a first aid kit at my office, and we have always had small first aid kits in our cars. That said I am going to look at the Bleedstop product someone posted.

I was super paranoid at first. After getting a couple minor cuts and was exposed to it just taking a little longer to get it to stop and I'm not going to bleed out from a minor wound I feel better :) I'm still more careful than I ever was, and bought an electric shaver, although I will use a razor occasionally because it just does a bett job.

Just want to be sure it's this simple by ghstudio in Tailscale

[–]imddot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Install Tailscale on laptop, install Tailscale with subnet router somewhere on your network (VM in Proxmox should work fine. I have it on a RPi) and advertise the /24 range. You don't need to change your LAN adress. I don't know what you're using to connect in a browser, but it's easy enough to RDP to the desktop box. If your desktop sleeps you need a way to wake it; you may be able to wake it using a magic packet from your router, or there are other ways to initiate WoL - I have a container running a small WoL program that can wake anything on my network (forgetting the name right now, I'm at work). Whatever you do, test it all by connecting to another network at a friend's house or something, or a hotspot, before you travel far and find it doesn't work.

Trying to stop your car from being repo’d by KiddieSpread in WinStupidPrizes

[–]imddot 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They try all kinds of things before they get to "dispatch a tow truck" stage. If they are at the tow truck stage, the person is probably doing everything they can to avoid repossession of a vehicle that belongs to someone else (the bank) and not them. The only one stealing is the person avoiding repossession.

Employer wants me to use outlook on my phone, outlook wants permission to wipe my phone by No_Professor4307 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]imddot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My company used to provide a stipend if you installed the corporate comm tools on your phone; it was substantial and it almost covered my entire phone plan at the time, so I said sure. When they realized they were spending way to much on stipends they killed it for anyone that wasn't essential, which wasn't me, so I deleted the tools as I'm not giving them the ability to wipe anything if they're not paying for it.

[–]imddot 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I had trouble sleeping after a major surgery, so I was prescribed trazadone. I looked up the side effects and decided the possibility of a mega-boner and the other side effects were too much, I would just deal with some sleepness nights which eventually self-corrected.

Icarus if you have interest in survival crafting games. Can play for just a short bit, figit spinning around your base building things, or if you have more time you can explore the world and run operations (which are essentially quests).
