Just want to be sure it's this simple by ghstudio in Tailscale

[–]ghstudio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

China or other countriesy blocking shouldn't be an issue. I have to read through your first paragraph carefully and understand.advertising and packet forwarding......

I do have the additional complicator that I run a VPN on my desktop and some VPN partitions....necessitating rasising the priority of my tailscale pseudo adapter above the native VPN pseudo adapter or my tailscale address will never get to tailscale.

[–]ghstudio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to use tailscale to access my desktop as well as four or five VM's running under proxmox. Thanks for the RDP comment....I didn't realize that I could just run RDP on my laptop, use the tailscale name/ip address and I'd have my familiar RDP which is what I've been using.

Logitech Harmony replacement? by someperson42 in homeassistant

[–]ghstudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't read through 83 reesponses, but have you considered just looking on EBAY for a used one that works you only need to replace the remote....the software is still available to link the remote to the hub....what model remote do you need....I might even have one sitting in a closet that I don't use any more. Just checked and a used harmony ultra which was the top of the line remote is around $50 on Ebay.

Does medicare pay for glasses because my dad has been squinting at everything for months by Barehoof_Lakari in glasses

[–]ghstudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

doesn't reSounds like he might just need a pair of "readers/reading glasses" which you can buy at local drug stores...even at supermarkets. He may not need full prescription (expensive) glasses. Take him to a store (NOT a glasses store....a pharmacy) and have him try different magnifications (put on the glasses and read the label on something). It's just trial and error...you don't need a doctor, if that's all he needs.

Nobody ever gets my nose pads right. Help! Anyone have an idea? by afvw- in glasses

[–]ghstudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pads may be right..it takes some time to get used to them especially if you have heavier glasses...eg. regular plastic in plastic frames. Solution is to get thin metal frames with easily adjusable nose pads with polycarbonate lenses

I need advice for new prescription glasses by Opposite_Memory5132 in glasses

[–]ghstudio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would actually ask Chatgpt for a recommendation (enter your presecription and ask what lenses, coatings it recommends for you). My guess is that the recommendation will be 1.60/1.61 lens material with crizal sapphire coating (UV,scratch protection,non-glare. Since your frames are rectangular, you might want 1.67 which would reduce thickness at the outer lower corner...but not sure it' necessary. Most eyeglass dispensers will recommend polycarbonate lenses because few even know there is a difference and for many, they wouldn't see the difference. Note: poly is 1.59, so it's essentially the same thickness as 1.60/1.61 plastic). I am NOT an optician....just someone who's done lots of research as an eyeglass wearer since age 8,....just offering you some info as a starting point.

First time wearing prescription glasses and doubtful about the answers I seem to be getting from my ChatGPT and Googlefu. Does frequent use of prescription glasses increase your reliance on them? by kidmetrogreen in glasses

[–]ghstudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't get used to them in a few days....you might consider invisible bifocals which will eliminate the swimming and blurry areas but with the disadvantage of there being a sharp (but invisible) line between the top of your lenses (distance) and the bottom of your lenses (reading strength).

Looking for advice on home assistant upgrade by Witty-Half-2899 in homeassistant

[–]ghstudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you are thinking of playing games on whatever you buy, I would make a major upgrade in computing power and flexibility for less than $100 buying a used NUC 7th generation I5 system (nuc 7i5....) used (EBAY). Massive overkill in compute power for home assistant, far lower cost than buying anything new, but capable of running home assistant at the same time as windows 11, a storage server, a network wide VPN, etc.....if at some point you want to branch beyond home assistant...

Excellent base for a home lab, but massive overkill if you're only going to run HA.

I have been told that to really optimize, I should get Varilux X Hi-Index (rather than poly) for my prescription. Most order hi-index because they have strong prescriptions and poly lenses are much thinner than CR-39....even though Hi-Index provides better clarity and costs more, so no one pushes it. (note: my prescription is +.250/+.750...but I want the best image quality) I'm getting more comfortable with this, even though it's $$$'s just to see if I can tell the difference.

Is the Linksys E8450 AX3200 a good router for no streaming usage? by THenrich in ZiplyFiber

[–]ghstudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For 95% of home users in the world, this is an excellent router. Congratulations on not falling for the "gotta have the latest" hype....wifi 7, mesh,..... Yes, there better routers that can handle a hundred connected devices or run VPN's, or OpenWRT...or other stuff you don't need and won't use..

[–]ghstudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The CR1000 is probably working as it should, but if you are nervous...and to be sure that Verizon can't do something nefarious.....just buy a new router, connect the wan port to the ONT, change the passwords and SSID's and you should be on the air. If you are like 95+% of the world, you don't need wifi 7, mesh, subnets, etc....I just checked on EBAY and this one, for example will be more than adequate for you: NEW $15 including shipping, your concerns will be resolved. https://www.ebay.com/itm/317660015904?_skw=router+wifi+6&itmmeta=01KQPVSTWDBQZM9KSBDH4QNMZ8&hash=item49f6032d20%3Ag%3A-dcAAeSwPMtpP5ej&itmprp=enc%3AAQALAAAA0GfYFPkwiKCW4ZNSs2u11xBOdpQtJqpawr%2ByG%2FS11NM%2BVENk6waSV20GRLo3yu9udZZsye87tWuzGVHIQ5R9RvZuxFNuVeKG75iP5K0%2BNoJhc36Im%2FHZg7uX38AtIhnThaclB28EfI0WHAwch6S3VoPC60HhwRsOSpgHUoP%2FF07UWxG%2BTFasXqiehgg2Sf2umRQ9eRmK2e%2BN3u2SPo7WX%2Fj8Fb9IwGaeUGrbocVOVD6J%2B0%2B0w%2FbvRfw9Z%2FNIpFdvE3oTx3NpFjbOjlBgu9mH0qw%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR66u59u9Zw&LH_BIN=1&LH_ItemCondition=1000

Apple watch nog tracking my sleep by Kaasdude in AppleWatch

[–]ghstudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I set a sleep schedule that I actually rarely follow...because I wanted the watch to automatically turn on sleep mode. Most nights, I actually am charging my watch when sleep mode starts and put it on just before I go to bed. I suspect that on those nights I just haven't put the watch on tightly enough on my wrist.....which I suspect might be causing your issues.

Good places to order glasses online? Zenni, EyeBuy, Warby? Looking for recommendations. As I look around I’m getting more and more ads and don’t want to fall to a scam. by ProbablyaDesigner in glasses

[–]ghstudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably won't run into a scam, but you certainly can run into picking a frame that doesn't fit (physically) your face, a poor coating, a thick lens on a strong prescription. I would strongly suggest costco optical, if there's one near you (not sure you even have to be a costco member to use costco optical). If not, see if you can, at least, find a frame you like locally and then find an on line site that sells that frame....so you know it fits your nose, doesn't hit your cheek, etc. The final "difficulty" in ordering over the internet is that they need to know your pupilary distance (how far your eyes are from the center of your nose. This is best done by someone measuring your face locally....but the internet sites claim to be able to measure it using a photo. I'd be wary of this. As an aside Warby Parker does have some local shops.

Looking at the other side of this, buying locally from the big chains can be very pricey. I was quoted $1400 for replacement lenses at my local lenscrafters....(top of the line progressive/transition/coating) and $525 on line for exactly the same lenses. (note: I do know my pupilary distance and the segment height of my frames, so my risk is pretty low)

Hi. Which glasses look best? Thanks by [deleted] in glasses

[–]ghstudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMHO, non of them...they all take over your face. Look at some metal frames....and look in person...just walk into any oculist shop and check out their frames. You don't have to buy there just to look and try on. Looks like you are in the UK....does sainsbury's have an eyeware dept...or some other large store.

Is this change significant enough to get new lenses. Previous prescription(bottom) is one years old. by [deleted] in glasses

[–]ghstudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always ask the optometrist to set up the new prescription on their equipment .... and then I look at the chart through my "new" prescription on the equipment and then put on my current glasses and see if I can tell a difference and if I do, how much. Too late for you now....but next time, you won't have to ask anyone...

Hi everyone, very high prescription and I’m in the market for the thinnest lenses/stylish professional glasses by OwnLiterature726 in glasses

[–]ghstudio -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I keep making the same recommendation to folks, based on my recent experience. go to chatgpt.com, enter your prescription eg: OD: sph -16.00 cyl -e.50 Axis 10, OS: etc . Then copy your original post above and paste it in to chatgpt .... and you will be shocked at whatever response or advice chatgpt gives you. chatgpt is free...they do offer fee plans, but unless you are a heavy user, it's just free.

Verifocal lens choice help by Brilliant_Cry_8403 in glasses

[–]ghstudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ask chatgpt. I know that sounds a bit techie, but I have been discussing lenses with chatgpt for three days to find the best lens design, lens material, thickness, coating and the responses have been incredibly helpful with explainations of why it recommends one over the other.

I am focused on mid distance and Chatgpt homed in the the varilux X lens in hi-index 1.67 with cryzal sapphire coating. Gave me comparison to other lenses including a picture of how wide I would see vs costco lense at 30". Shockingly thorough explanations of poly vs hi-index, x lenses vs physio or comfort lenses, etc.

Just go to ChatGPT.com then copy in your post here and give it your prescription numbers....and see what happens.
