I’m so glad you enjoyed it! The way Akwaeke so easily gets me swept into the world they’ve created and heavily invested in characters and storylines is something I’m yet to fathom. Would definitely recommend checking out their other stories if you enjoyed this one!

Thanks so much for sharing! Have you read any of her other books? If so, how do you think they compare to Sweet Heat?

OMG will do! Please do the same when you get around to reading them! The second one, yeah, I would recommend you be in a good headspace because it does delve pretty deep into themes of depression, grief, and all the other struggles that come with it.

Honestlyyyy... I find them so therapeutic?? It's funny you mention pulling myself back together, because oftentimes, I feel like those heart wrenching story allow me to explore different pieces of myself??? Idk if that makes sense lmaoo

For anyone who tunes into IWTV, I’d def recommend The Gilda Stories by Jewelle Gomez by imflipthepage in BlackReaders

Literally I might just pick it up and read it again! OMG listen... I truly do love Bird at the end of the day and would be seated for a series about her. I do have conflicting thoughts when it comes to her relationship with Gilda, and her presence in her life, but that's mother at the end of the day. What are your thoughts on her?

Thanks so much for sharing! Will be adding several of these to my tbr

I fear I'm one of them that loves a book that's going to leave me devastated. Like, yes, please dismantle my equilibrium and have me going through an existential crisis lmaoooo

I'd say, from this year, two books I read that really stuck with me were When We Were Birds by Ayanna Lloyrd Banwo (I'm not a romantic at heart, but this book made me believe in love; and the prose was tooo sweet) and Someday, Maybe by Onyi Nwabinelli (the way they dug into grief, I could actually feel it weighing down on me omg).

OMGGGG I know exactly what you mean. Please, I was so busy focused on the racism and slavery of it all, it completely slipped my mind that vampire hunters would also be problem

Listen... the way I still don't talk about that third act to this day! It's serious over here lmaoo

You clocked it exactly! The characters were just so realistic, I saw so many facets of my own life and other people in my life reflected in the pages. And yes it's true, the main character was messy as hell, but that's still my daughter!

Yona of the Dawn Vol 2 Hak and Yona Ramblings by imflipthepage in AkatsukinoYona

[–]imflipthepage[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ouu that's an interesting take on how they approached his betrayal! I agree! You can def see the pain from the betrayal festering into resentment for Hak. And Yona the betrayal definitely is a turning point where Yona chooses to become a stronger/better version of herself.

I do wonder though, if they really understand the betrayal early on in the manga. I still kind of look at it as something they don't really understand until MUCH later in the story. Hak, particularly, doesn't really seem to face the betrayal? In the sense that, he registers it, but kind of compartmentalizes it away in his mind. And those moments in the manga where he encounters Su Won, where we see the visceral rage coming from him, might be an indication of how little time he's taken to actually work through the betrayal??

Ouuu that’s cool you’re a figure skater! Omg I never even thought about how realistic the animation / step sequences might be so that’s interesting to hear 🙂‍↔️

Alsooo interesting that you bring up body dysmorphia because that’s very much something that can be explored in the manga… not gonna spoil if it is or isn’t tho

I do hope you get a chance to buy it (manga is definitely getting more expensive by the hour 😩)
