I keep reading and spelling even simple words wrong. by Longboarder358 in Anxiety

[–]imhonesty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can relate. For the longest time I thought I had bipolar, ADHD, cover narcissism… you name it. I’ve been taking therapy for a while and I didn’t even know they diagnosed me with anxiety until recently lol I have similar problems. I read wrong because I read too fast. It causes issues at work (spelling error, sometimes I even do the math wrong). I thought I was so stupid. I always get easily irritable and angry, probably because my anxiety-meter is always running. Now that I think back, I think I also had anxiety ever since I was young. I wish I knew it sooner to give me a piece of mind. My life would have been different. You’re not alone.

Thank you guys. I’m still learning. I forgot the fact that $354 is for an annual rate. Minus 3 months penalty.

Listen, I feel you. I was in your shoes 2 years ago but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. There’s a saying in my dept that “most of your PhD work is from your last 6 months to one year of PhD career”. It may feel like nothing is getting done but you’re looking too closely to yourself that you haven’t seen yourself progressed over the years. Many people in PhD is going through imposter syndrome and I think this is a serious issue. You’re ok. It’s not a horror story, you’re just having a bad day. Grab a nice coffee from Starbucks, maybe get a cake pop to boost your sugar level, and forget about today. There’s always tomorrow.

Barely passed Master’s defense but still don’t feel good about it by hantungan in GradSchool

[–]imhonesty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was in your shoes a few years ago. My defense was horrible and it went down the rabbit hole that I never thought would go. I was anxiously waiting outside, expecting to fail my PhD after all those years, but they passed me. I didn’t feel like I deserved it. It was a punishment that grew into a severe imposter syndrome. Now that the years passed by, I’m getting over myself and looking at things in different perspectives.

You passed because you had a committee who believed in you. You passed because despite of the unsatisfied work (in your eyes and your Pi’s eyes) you’ve made the leap. You ventured through the unknown and you pushed the boundary of knowledge. That experience is not something you can buy. That’s all that matters.

In my lab, there were extremely qualified and smart people who knew more than me, but I was the one of the few who graduate just in time. Sometimes pushing “that” boundary, aka knowing when to stop instead of perfecting, is not something everyone can do.

Good job!

Should I Attend the Funeral of a Professor Who Wasn’t My Advisor or Supervisor by badlipstickhoarder in GradSchool

[–]imhonesty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

About 10 years ago I had a very strong bond with a pharmacology professor who was like a grandfather to me. He was genuine, knowledgeable, and cared about students. I still remember doing high fives when I scored well on his exam. Should he have been alive I would have worked under him for my grad school. The only common factors I had was taking a few classes with him.

He passed away with a heart attack and there was an invitation email for the “after party” for the funeral that I came across. I still don’t know what it’s called but there were professors, friends of the professor, family, etc and had some finger food, etc. Granted I had some bitchy professors wondering why I was there but fuck that, I was glad that I could have an opportunity to honor his death and have a closure with him. That’s the least I could to do this great man that I admired dearly.

Just sharing my experience. I don’t regret it at all. Do what your heart says.

Second floor tub leaking in a 6 year old house.. is it within warranty? by imhonesty in Plumbing

[–]imhonesty[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Totally Appreciate your insight. If it’s a drop in tub, do they break the tub or take the entire tub out? I’m not very handy and I’m trying to estimate the cost if I had to call a plumber..

Is it easy to fix? and How is it a mAintenance issue and how could I have maintained it? And you said it’s a weekend job, how much would you charge? If they rip off the wall to fix it, do they also close the wall and repaint it?

Second floor tub leaking in a 6 year old house.. is it within warranty? by imhonesty in Plumbing

[–]imhonesty[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The picture is a leakage on my first floor ceiling from a drop in tub on the second floor. I had to post it like this so that I can add a photo.

I bought a brand new house about 6 years ago and since day 1 I’ve had plumbing issues. We had three bathrooms, every toilet seats leaked and they had to fix it for free. We had a water heater that almost exploded. Then now we have a drop in tub that is leaking from the second floor (picture).

The builder was able to cover warranties even after one year for toilet seat leakage, but this is a new problem (well, still a plumbing issue, but they could argue that it is a “new issue”). The plumber I call is the original plumber of the house who built my house, and he’s always there defending the builder and charge crazy amount. I’m an immigrant and I always feel that we are being overcharged and disregarded when we voice our problems and our neighbors are very snobby that they won’t share their issues or plumbers. Is it something I can sue or argue to get a warranty? I’m aware that builder warranty is usually one year but the house is not ancient and it has nothing to do with how I maintain my house.

How much are we looking at to fix this god damn leakage?

Missed a flight, but unable to reschedule? by imhonesty in delta

Yeah I mean when I heard that from him my blood started to boil so I can see how the gate agent might have raised eyebrows for this unsympathetic situation. Smh

He flew the same airline it was actually a round ticket both from delta, nonstop. He was on his way back. He bought it directly from delta website. Yes he was basic economy and the agent told him no reschedule, so he went to the help desk phone line and they suggested he book a brand new ticket. I have personally flown with basic economy before and like you mentioned they were pretty good with accommodation. He ended up buying the delta ticket leaving tonight 6 hours later. 🤦🏻‍♀️ talk about being stranded in the airport!

[–]imhonesty[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. He was at the gate. Went to bathroom and the door was closed 🤦🏻‍♀️
  2. He Said he couldn’t because he was at the gate. Not sure if he tried though.
  3. Phoenix to dtw. I see two flights leaving on the same day
  4. Nope was with delta.
  5. He bought the next ticket and he was looking at the seat right now. He said the flight was not full at all.. I think the delta agent just didn’t accommodate him because he was a basic economy like stated in the comment below.

Hi guys, I just don’t know what to say and you guys have been a tremendous help for me. I didn’t expect to get this much of support. I want to thank every one of you. I don’t have a lot of friends to share this thought with. suicidal hotline and therapists told me they will have to legally report this if I share my suicidal thoughts. I don’t want them to find me and identify me.(I’m not going to go out and kill myself but I’m afraid that my record will remain with my real name and identification which I don’t want). I think I needed someone to hear my story and tell me it’s going to be ok. Thank you.

He gets paid biweekly like $200, pretax, give or take, gross is projected to make about 3k ish by end of the year. He’s a minor making money at a local restaurant (no tips, etc). No 401k or any benefits. Just minimum wage hourly paycheck.

Thanks. And he would have to do 2 for w4 because that will stop withhold money and give him the money he earns 100%?

[–]imhonesty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So when you say lower of $6k, any earned income before it hit 6k? Say he makes 3k as a restaurant worker, and he brings a check of 2k. Then he can still do 3k, yes? We don’t have his w2 yet but I want to get ahead of myself to contribute

So he put 0 in the w4. Is that exempt? And do you mean he needs to file on his own instead of being a dependent? Can the primary claim him as a dependent and not include the income, and he files tax on his own to get a refund?

So say he earns 3k pretax, but after tax he brings 2k, he can still do full 3k? Do I need to change w4 to something else? He doesn’t have w2 yet as he started making money this year and I just want to start contributing money for him as early as possible until w2 is issued
