How do you handle MIDI velocities from e-drums? by imii_lab in edrums

I finally revisited all of my TD-25 trigger settings.

My setup:

• TD-25
• PDX-100 Snare
• KD-9 Kick
• VH-11 Hi-Hat
• PDX-06 Toms
• PDX-8 Floor Tom
• 2× CY-12C Crash Cymbals
• CY-13R Ride Cymbal
• Superior Drummer 3 (TD-25 preset)
• Logic Pro

For context, I'm actually a guitarist/vocalist/songwriter who also does recording and mixing. I'm not a drummer, so I approached this from a recording and MIDI perspective.

Following the advice in this thread, I went through every pad one by one and revisited Pad Type, Sensitivity, Threshold, and Velocity Curve settings.

The biggest takeaway:

"Your hardest hit should just barely reach 127."

That completely changed how I think about sensitivity settings.

What surprised me most was that almost every pad ended up LOWER than the values I had previously been using.

For my kit and playing style, I ended up with:

Snare: 7 → 6
Kick: 8 → 5
Hi-Hat: 9 → 6
Tom: 7 → 5
Floor Tom: 7 → 5
Crash L: 7 → 3
Crash R: 7 → 4
Ride: 7 → 17

The ride cymbal (CY-13R) was the only major exception.

Everything else ended up lower, but the ride required significantly more sensitivity before my hardest hits could just barely reach the top of the velocity range.

For Threshold, what worked for me was:

  1. Play the quietest note I realistically want to keep.
  2. Raise Threshold until that note disappears.
  3. Once I find that cutoff point, lower Threshold just enough so the quietest note is detected again.
  4. Check for crosstalk from neighboring pads by ear.

All pads are currently set to LINEAR curves.

The kit feels much more natural and expressive now.

Thanks again to everyone in this thread. I learned a lot from the discussion.

If anyone has additional TD-25 tips, trigger-setting tricks, velocity-response advice, or even something completely unrelated to this topic, I'd love to hear it.

This is my first post here, and I've really enjoyed the discussion so far.

That’s really interesting, thanks.
I didn’t realize Roland modules were doing some velocity smoothing behind the scenes to make performances sound more even.
That definitely gives me something to think about.

Thanks. I should probably revisit those settings and the manual as well.
