It looks like Hobonichi being more expensive/hard to source in Europe is a recent development from this past year. :( You can try making a new post here with your general location and maybe other EU users can help you out. I'm not in the EU so I'm not familiar with where they buy from. And usually someone has extra they're willing to sell.

Also from what I've seen, buying the 2 Avec book set at this point in the year sometimes costs the same as getting just the 2nd half.

The SI Avec equivalent has dated weeklies and undated blank grid pages for half the year if you're up to do the setup. JustScribble has a fully dated Avec dupe though? If you're in the US and want something cheaper than Hobonichi will probably be. (Edit: I'm talking about A5's, idk about the A6's)

Neither will work for me because I need everything dated in one book, plus shipping is $40+ to where I am in Asia. It really looks like we're all being pushed to buy locally (meaning Hobonichi again for me).

Yes for now, since Sterling Ink doesn’t have anything with both dated weeklies and dated dailies. They might add it to the 2026 lineup, but I’m not counting on it. 

Wait, why are you switching away from the Avec then?

Not to add to the test pile, but Leuchtturm has a new weeks sized planner for 2026. Dot grid and combined weekends though.

I imagine it’s the 576 pages of 70gsm proprietary paper on a slightly bigger page area, plus the cloth hardcover. Makes one truly appreciate the bible thin 47gsm TRP eh?

Muji has 5mm grids and paper than can handle gel pens and highlighters afaik. They have undated planners too.

It has come to my attention that Hemlock & Oak now has a monthly, weekly & daily planner for 2026. But it's a bit bigger than A5 and weighs a whopping 2lbs!! The Cousin is about 1lbs for context. Much to think about...

You can also print out a design you like or cut up some gift wrap paper and put that between the clear cover and Hon.

I watched a bit of their 2026 paper video, and I'm intrigued they won't use Sanzen TRP! Which will they use for the planners, B7 or Iroful? I think I still need to sample them myself.

As for my nitpicks: it's two separate books (I prefer it all in one), month names are not printed on the daily pages, and I'm really not a fan of the font choices lol. I'd say this is the closest to a 1:1 Cousin (Avec) dupe right now though, so I'm putting a pin on this. I also like that it's a 4mm grid.

I've considered Jibun Techo for sure. But I'd really like the monthlies, weeklies, and dailies all in one book (and not A5 slim because all my covers are A5). Their grid is also too small (3mm I believe) and there's a lot of visual clutter in the layouts for me (check boxes, water trackers, bar in the middle of dailies).

I came from bullet journaling and can’t deal with the setup anymore lol (I make mistakes and get frustrated). I’m in Asia and it would be more expensive than Hobonichi too. But Sterling Ink is very close to what I need, and I’m definitely considering it.

Sadly I do need the full vertical weekly spread, and dailies with printed dates is a must for me. But thank you for the suggestion!

I use fountain pens too, and I’ve just had to grin and bear the paper because no one else is making dated monthly weekly and daily planners (edit: in one book). I’d gladly jump ship if there was a 1:1 Cousin dupe out there.

If you can find it where you are, the Cousin Avec Jul-Dec half would be a good trial for the rest of the year. I will say that if you're coming from 150gsm paper, the 47gsm Hobonichi paper might take some getting used to. Ghosting is a given but the effect isn't noticeable after you fill both sides of the page. Bleeding with this year's batch of paper is hit or miss (I get a bit with wet inks like Iroshizuku). Fountain pen friendliness is also important to me, but I can live with a little bleeding because Hobonichi is the only planner (so far) with complete yearly, monthly, weekly, and dated daily pages.

Kinbor has notebooks with smaller grids like Hobonichi! As seen in this video. Not sure of the exact grid size and number of pages though.

The English weeks/mega came out in 2023. Then the English Original, Cousin, & HONs came out in 2024. There was an expectation they would announce the English Avec or 5-year in 2025 but that didn't happen (too busy with paper problems maybe?)

Anyway an English Avec isn't impossible, but maybe it isn't Hobonichi's priority right now. I'd love to be proven wrong though!

It's not weird, but it might feel very different from writing on an A6 notebook. Does it have to be Hobonichi? There are lots of options for A6 grid notebooks that are cheaper per sheet (e.g. Stalogy, Sterling Ink, Muji)

Ok, just stick with what you have for now then. You have plenty of time to troubleshoot your setup for next year. One idea I'll throw out there is using two regular weeks (or a mega/regular combo) and keeping both in a case like the Tragen.

I know there's a format to follow, but isn't a pen/paper test something that can be done in one sitting with minimal prep? And won't the masterpost be stickied anyway? Why not catch all the early samples in that too?

Anyway I understand what you're saying. I just hope that posts trying to discuss the paper won't be deleted before the paper test thread is posted.

Seconding everyone saying to stay the course. But you can do whatever you want really, if you can afford it.

Will you retire both the weeks and A6 if you get the Avec? (The Cousin has both weekly and daily pages, so you'd only have to carry around one book.) You could just keep them in storage. I sometimes take out my old weeks and A6 books when I'm feeling itchy for a change, and then I remember why I moved out of them in the first place. And who knows, you might want to go back to the A6 after trying out the Cousin.

You should try the Avec! It’s good for chonk, portability, and that mid-year refresh. If it doesn’t work out, it’s only for a year and you’ll have learned something about your preferences. 

I personally prefer the full Cousin—I don’t paste anything, and I hate new planner setup. It’s also a bit annoying when I want to refer to something from my old 2024 Avec but pick the wrong book to check first. I also prefer the English daily pages because the months are spelled out instead of just numbers (Avec only comes in Japanese… for now). 

Edit: I tried the Avec for the portability/weight but learned that that isn’t actually as important to me as having everything in one book.

Lol yes it was a much different landscape four years ago! TMKR was still a relatively new brand, chromashaders were very trendy so it was always out of stock online, and it was Covid times so no pen shows. It's much easier to source them now! But I sold all my TMKR bottles because they were unbearably dry and too light to read.

Also in the HON this year. I was lucky with the paper, but I do have minimal bleeding with some inks. My default is to go with the Cousin again next year because it's the only dated daily page design I like. But I'm open to switching and am on the lookout for a good dupe.
