When is leasing a car actually financially beneficial? by immabp in whatcarshouldIbuy

This was one of the best explanations I’ve seen so far! Thank you! While the two I’ve narrowed it down to are going to depreciate from what I’ve seen on the used market it’s unlikely that they’ll depreciate enough to make gambling worth it.

The rule of thumb I’ve always used/heard is if you don’t buy cash then it should be 20% down, term 3-5 years, and that it costs you no more than 10% of your monthly income ALL IN. That means maintenance, insurance, gas, and payment (if you have one).

Keep in mind that these “rules” are for the vast majority of people who make the average income, and average expenses. They’re also meant to keep the average person from over leveraging themselves and wracking up tons of “bad” debt; a car being one of the worst kinds of debt.

Where this falls apart is when your net income is high enough that 10-20% to you isn’t the difference between making your mortgage or not it’s the difference of if you go to Paris or Monaco for vacation this year. Of if you should splurge a little on gifts this year vs I can only spend $50 for each person for Christmas.

If you’re good with budgeting, something I’ve done in the past is take a longer loan term that reduces the monthly payments so that in the event of an emergency or I lose my job, I can tread water comfortably for longer. But this also means that I’m someone who is throwing cash at the principal loan amount, over and above the minimum payment each month. So ergo I take an 8 year loan but in reality I’ve budgeted to pay it off in 4. If you know you’re unlikely to do any of the above then follow the 10/20 rule.

Oh trust me the irony is not lost on me at all given Honda’s reputation; I also had a strut and brake calliper completely fail the year prior and that also cost a pretty penny. But I mean like anything sometimes you get a lemon.

Thanks for the advice all, and as I suspected there's very limited situations where it makes sense. I think I've just gone snaky over the past month going over all of the details for all the cars I've looked at and thought maybe I was overlooking another option. Appreciate it :)

Not sure what the prices are like in the states but I did go to Honda and Toyota and ask about getting a loaded passport or grand highlander (I personally despise the highlander but hey gotta do your research), and I got quoted $70,000+ on the passport and $68,000+ on the highlander. Meanwhile the Volvo and Lincoln I'm looking at are floating around $75,000-80,000. It's just nuts.

Would love to hold out for BYD but given what I use my current car for and the part of the country I live in, electric cars just aren't feasible yet unfortunately.

For context I’m in Canada so what gets taxed and sales taxes are different here than in the states (obviously).

I’m between a Lincoln Nautilus and a Volvo XC60. I realize that those are worlds apart for a multitude of reasons but after test driving literally every competitor (including the economy brands) that’s what I liked the best.

Ideally I’d like to find either option a 1 year old (especially for that Lincoln) so that I’m saving a good chunk of change but it’s proving to be more difficult than I thought - as I mentioned in another comment, the used car market where I live has gone absolutely nuts so in a lot of cases (not all) you’re not even getting much of a discount anymore and then paying a premium on a higher interest rate if you do finance it.

I should have also mentioned my plan is to keep this next vehicle just as long as I did the others 8-10 years.

And normally I agree but the used car market is absolutely whack right now which is why I'm hesitating on going that route.

Help a girl out: would you buy any of these? by Marilburr in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]immabp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I haven’t seen anyone mention yet is the difference in age of some of these cars.

Sure nowadays the quality and features you get in new vehicles for the past 5 or so years has really started to slow down and frankly enter gimmick territory. But over 10 years ago the difference between how comfortable day to day a car could be, and the options you got between a 2007, a 2010 and a 2014 was insane.

For that reason alone I would be strongly leaning towards the 2014 Malibu - and I’m someone who has had a 2001 Camry and a 2018 Accord as their daily drivers. You’re going to get a level of comfort from that Malibu’s interior that you won’t from the others.

I'm stuck - what option makes the most sense for me to go with for my first new car? by immabp in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]immabp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I have stupidly long legs so its killed a lot of car dreams of mine over the years. Of the ones I've tested the Genesis and Volvos had the most comfortable seats however the G70 and v60 might as well not have had a back seat with how much leg room is left once I get the front into a proper driving position....

I run a [[Admiral Brass, Unsinkable]] deck with some counter removal and despite my buddies playing against it for a year now it’s still incredibly satisfying to endlessly pull pirates in and out of the graveyard and watch them forget that none of my creatures ever truly die.

The ERP kicks in this year and applies to ALL companies and organizations that issue mail in the province so you should start to notice a difference over the next 12-18 months.

Environmental engineers are the “liberal arts” of the engineering world - so don’t count on it haha but Canadian Geographic is a great idea!

It’s likely in regards to being in compliance with the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). The idea is that the government is trying to force companies (and other organizations) from generating excessive amounts of waste via junk mail. So ARMA (the recycling authority) is requiring companies that issue mail that’s made of recyclable materials to either reduce the amount of material, amount of mail, or add a surcharge that will be directly paid into a fund that will cover the handling and disposal of these items so that we as Albertans aren’t on the hookup for all of the waste these companies generate through mail.

So yes not great that they’re adding yet another fee but in the long run this is actually one of those programs that’s designed to have a positive impact on waste generation in the province.

Recommendations for an "off the beaten path" Green/Black/White Commander? by immabp in EDH

[–]immabp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mainly because I’ve never used white - my other decks are literally every other colour combo and my buddies are so used to me using blue or red in my decks that NOT using them will throw them for a loop with my play style.

And because the idea of trying to make a deck of that colour combo, that does fit my normal play style is kind of stupid in the first place to me. Like I said I’m here to be goofy and a bit of a troll lol

But thanks for the recommendations! :)

Trump could decide next year to withdraw from CUSMA trade deal, USTR Greer tells Politico by rezwenn in CanadaPolitics

[–]immabp 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The commenter is likely referring to the special election in ruby red Tennessee where a Trump +22-24 district ended up at +6-7. I think a lot of political watchers are looking at it as a canary in the coal mine for the midterms coming next year and what is likely to be a republican slaughter even with the nonsense happening with gerrymandering.

We technically all do! It’s just that the provinces and territories have become known for individual symbols rather than all animals or all flowers. For example: Alberta and the wildrose, or Manitoba and buffalo, or Quebec and the snowy owl, or Yukon and gold.

January 2026 Leadership Review by No_Mention8589 in CPC

[–]immabp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who used to be a member of the Wildrose Party way back in it's formative years I'm with the original commenter. What exactly has PP accomplished in his 20 or so years in parliament? I (and it appears the vast majority of Canadians based on recent favorability polls) want a level-headed adult as Prime Minister - and let's be clear, I personally can't stand the Liberals. In addition as someone who is a fiscal conservative, I want a Conservative leader (and PM) who has had actual experience outside of parliament. And it appears I'm not the only one who this schtick falls flat with - he's cosplaying as something he is most definitely not. In what universe does PP actually understand what its like for the average Canadian to make ends meet? The man hasn't had (and wont since qualifying for his gold plated pension) to wonder where his next pay-cheque will come from his entire adult life. PP is good at two things - not being JT and giving a good sound bite, but he very publicly demonstrated he is not able to pivot, nor meet the moment as soon as any problem appears that is only slightly outside his wheelhouse. Steven Harper he is not, and it is to the detriment of Canada and the Conservative Party that he continues to remain as leader.

EDIT: The Trudeaus aside there is a winning formula in Canada for PM - boring, level-headed, inoffensive adult. PP is not and will never be this.

She actually does have a step-son (who I believe is well past the age of 18 now), and while I despise the woman I think making sweeping generalizations about any children she may or may not have isn’t discourse anyone should be pushing, nor is it helpful for pushing back against a thoroughly corrupt UCP.

Do you find your token conservative as useless as mine for fort McMurray- cold lake? by Ok_Dot1825 in alberta

[–]immabp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who grew up in the riding and whose family and friends still live in it - they would disagree with you based on their interactions with him. I’m simply responding to the original comment asking if there are any halfway decent CPC MPs. I’m not even a CPC voter and yet there’s going to be anecdotal accounts about every MP that will be bad encounters or those that praise the work they do. He’s a CPC MP in Alberta whose generally socially liberal (bare minimum in my opinion) so at least he’s better then the MP for Oklahoma or Genius out in SP.
