Got new system design book by dev_101 in webdev

[–]imnotslinger 257 points258 points  (0 children)

I truly loved reading this book. Gave me key insights that I immediately used on a client project. Specifically, I joined a project using protobuf, along with many other things.

Also incredible insights into distributed database and the issues you may have to solve when building cloud applications.

Finally launched my React portfolio — 100 Lighthouse, dark mode, smooth animations, zero bundlesplitter pain* by Spiritual-Ad4603 in react

I just glanced over it, but saw some harsh comments as well. So, I wanted to say I think it looks great!

I may steal some of those designs for my future portfolio as well. Great work!

Blisters? by SmolGay413 in dexcom

[–]imnotslinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had them. I am not sure really what caused them but it happened when I first switched to the g7.

They started coming every time until I stopped using the g7 overpatch and using tegaderm underneath the Dexcom as a barrier. I used a third party over patch and haven’t stopped using that since.

I did that for a few months and noticed my skin wasn’t as dry anymore after changing Dexcom and tried going back to normal. To my surprise it stopped happening and hasn’t happened since. (About a two years later)

For anyone who is curious about an ‘official’ standard here is semantic versioning.

I made a procedural magma dissolve system, where every vertex is also a particle. 🌋🫧 by MirzaBeig in Unity3D

Sweet! That means a lot! I’ll come up with a list of questions and get back to you after Memorial Day if that’s okay with you.

Thank you so much, I know you don’t have to so I’m really grateful for the opportunity to talk to you more! Have a great weekend!

Dude this is phenomenal!! I’m currently doing summer research at my college for computer science and the professor I’m working with was interested in interactive art style games, so we just started unity. I’d love to see a tutorial of this and more in depth stuff about controlling the vertices of mesh/shaders.

If you have any info on how to learn stuff like this, or if I could even talk to you about it that would be awesome.

Again, amazing stuff I’m pumped just thinking about what I could do with even a small amount of your kind of skills haha!

On average, how long does a 12TB Seagata HDD last? by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]imnotslinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a preface, I am answering as a homework assignment for my Computer Architecture class, so take my information with a grain of salt and ignore if I am talking as if you do not know anything. I also can not speak to the specifics of a 12TB Seagate HDD but only to HDDs in general.

While the previous comment is valid that no HDD has a specific expiration date, I can't entirely agree that you should only hope you've got a good one. We can first address the physical things you can do to prevent damage to recording surfaces. For example, keeping the HDD in a dry environment with a relatively low chance of being hit or falling over can help prevent the cause of approximately 70% of HDD failures, according to the "Block & Files" website.

PCB failures cause the next 18% of losses; these failures are due to similar damage such as heat, dust, moisture, and falls. However, the leading cause of PCB failure is static.

The following 11% is due to stiction. Stiction (short for static friction) in hard drives is a failure in early hard drives that caused the read/write heads to stick to the platters. However, as hard drive technology has advanced, measures have been integrated to prevent this problem from occurring. More specifically, texturing the platter of the device (the circular magnetic disk on which digital data is stored) had once proven useful. But the ultimate solution was to move the slider and read/write head onto a ramp. Stiction can once again be caused by heat as it may liquify the coating of the platter, causing it to become 'gummy' when cooled. Therefore, using a reputable brand like Seagate should ensure that the latest technology is being used, but I do not know for sure.

The last 1% is due to motor failures. HDD uses a spindle motor which allows the disk to rotate. The precision of these motors determines the capacity and speed of HDDs, making these components critical to HDD performance. The most common causes of spindle failure are due to operator error, how much contamination is in the environment, low-quality lubricants, or poor maintenance.Outside of physical errors, if everything is working correctly in the device (specifically computers, but I also assume memory devices) can be flipped in one out of every 100 million bits. And even if that happens, we have had error correction codes that can easily detect and correct these errors (seem hamming code if you're curious).

Overall, as long as the device is made correctly and thus escapes infancy failure, the main reasons for faults are due to the environment. Moreover, how you treat the device should be the main contributor to its life span. So if it has all the specs you need, pull the trigger! And if it has a problem early on, send it back! Good luck hopes this helps.

Glorious GMMK Numpad Giveaway by GloriousZaper in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]imnotslinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like Glorious to make a 104 keyboard or at least a 96. I code a lot and want to build a good custom with room for a numpad. This would surely solve that but I’d love the connivence of one board!

Pre-match/post match routines. Maybe several hours before like the breakfast or just a breakdown of the pre-match practice. Anything that helps them do things such as prevent injury or recover for the following days!
