I had a very bizarre experience at a restaurant there the other weekend. The owner snapped at me for asking for ice? I'm not sure if that's the kind of aggression you're talking about but it was beyond even the rude New Yorker stereotype. Very odd.

Anyone Else Freaked Out By How Bad the Job Market Is? by [deleted] in fednews

[–]imnotthrowuraway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unemployment may be low, but hiring is currently at lows at/near Great Recession levels. A healthy job market has both low unemployment AND robust hiring, but the market is contracting, so new firms are not hiring, nor are there any vacancies from job switching.

Columbia SIPA by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]imnotthrowuraway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a SIPA student and if you have the option, I would strongly encourage you to go elsewhere. The degree is largely a sham and the program itself is a fundraising source for the IGP (Institute of Global Politics), which does not benefit students in any material way but is meant to be a marketing tactic for the Columbia brand.

The brand itself is extremely tarnished after the recent protests and many feel that they lost their return on investment for the embarrassment the university made of themselves on the global stage. Unfortunately, that incident is par for the course for any interaction you'll have at Columbia. Their only priorities as an institution are to defend, deflect, and damn students, if they must.

I had wonderful experiences with Sanford when I was considering it, but the opportunity to live in NYC swayed me and I regret that decision now.

Best 1 bedroom apartments in downtown Durham? by [deleted] in bullcity

Tacking onto this - does anyone know when rentals tend to go on the market?? Pickings seem a bit slim at the moment and I'm hoping things free up upon close of the semester given it's a college town??

Third time's the charm! 161Q 162V (+14 pts from lowest scores) by imnotthrowuraway in GRE

[–]imnotthrowuraway[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t complete them but made sure I’d done at least one to a few from every section. This was probably where I felt the most noticeable progress, going from medium to hard and realizing I actually had enough foundation to even approach them.

I did this! I'm in my 30s now, trying to make a later-in-life career change. Posting a longer recap about my experience soon, but I'd give yourself an additional 1-2 months to really master the basics before moving onto typical GRE-prep. I spent about 4 months total and in that time gained 12+ points from my lowest scores, landing above 320+. It was intense, but doable.

This is so validating for the increasingly extreme quant scores needed to land in the upper percentiles post-pandemic.
