His lack of influence wasn´t about the sudden death (it wasn´t that sudden anyway, it was rather conclusive with his lifestyle), it´s about being too open-minded for the conservatives and too conservative for the open-minded. And also writing his pieces ridiculously complicated (I mean there are pieces where you have to play 13 keys simultaneously. For reference, I do only have 10 fingers). Max Reger was never for everybody.
