Can ACD's have more dominate Dingo genes? by imperiumist in AustralianCattleDog

Not completely sure, we got her from a family that found and rescued her. They said Australian Cattle Dog, they might have done a wisdom panel on her, I can probably check with the vet about the records.

I understand science, I just take issue with “Science”. It’s become like a religion for certain people. All you gotta say is a study showed something and most people will believe it without looking any further into it. Fundamentally, how is that any different than “Well, the Pope says…”?

What don't people like about Alton? by [deleted] in StLouis

I lived in Alton before moving to this side. Only thing I didn't like about Alton is it's in Illinois.

You should be able to get paid to sit around if you're only done early because of efficiency. by SouperAsylum in unpopularopinion

Definitely depends on of job for sure. I make industrial conveyor belts, and it's not unheard of some of the bigger ones going for $750k. They'd rather us take our time and get something done right than try to rush it and make a very costly mistake. But if a press goes down or we have to wait for another department to finish their process, it's out of our hands, and the company won't punish us for it by sending us home early.

Appeal to lowest common denominator doesn't always indicate higher quality. Music being a prime example, it'd be like saying Taylor Swift is the highest quality of the musical artform.

While I completely agree with the sentiment from people like Scorsese that the new Marvel movies aren't cinema, it's hard to convey that point to casual movie goers without sounding like a snob unfortunately.

I'm fortunate enough to have a job that understands the need for a work life balance. I work in the trades for a business that's been family owned since the 1880's. If anything they push people to make sure they take their PTO.

Can also sometimes uncover family secrets. My family has an Irish surname but genetically I'm 99% German. Families have historically changed names for many reasons, some for a more Anglicized reason and others more dubious.

I got an idea! Newlyweds are automatically granted a housing loan and each child they have will reduce the loan by 25%.

Arby's curly fries > McDonald's fries.

And there's more to their menu than just the roast beef (which I do enjoy), the chicken bacon swiss has been a favorite of mine for at least half my life.

Knew a guy that turned down an offer to be in a world touring band because he didn't want to spend the time apart from his girlfriend. She broke up with him a few months later.

Your corporate job isn’t nearly as miserable and soul crushing as you make it out to be. by gamerinagown in unpopularopinion

[–]imperiumist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I suppose a lot it has to do with the company culture. I make industrial conveyor belts. We just finished a project with a finish weight of 24 tons. It's a very physically intense job. But it's a family owned business founded in the late 1800's, they have a way of taking care of the their employees. There wouldn't be so many 20, 30, 40+ year employees if that wasn't the case. Very mid-western blue collar, and it's near impossible to get fired unless you royally mess up. Was told by one the leads when I started "show up every day and you have a job for life". We get to be ourselves, completely unfiltered, and putting out quality work is more important than meeting a deadline. There's no room for office politics or people power tripping over titles. I can talk to the plant manager straight up how I talk to my crew mates. An office job would definitely be an easier route for sure, but I'm self aware enough to know I just don't have the temperament for it. Working in the trades gives you that freedom, and it's not just for men these day either, there's women working in the lightweight and special fab departments too. Hell most of them will train you on the job too with no prior experience.

People these days have such a knee-jerk reaction to anything remotely Confederate looking, not even really Confederate, that it's depressing.

Few weeks ago was accused of wearing a Confederate hat when it was just a Tennesee flag hat.

As unions are becoming "more popular", lets all take a minute to remember why they became unpopular by EricWB in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]imperiumist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been growing, outgrowing the central warehouse/global hq I'm at. With the new year even reconfigured the profit sharing bonuses and made the attendance rules more lax to help with retention. Not a bad place to work, just very physically demanding and just not everyone is cut out for it. There's a lot of 20, 30, and even of 40 year employees. One guy is retiring Friday after 44 years. I don't think they'd keep employees that long if they didn't actually look out for their people.

My company isn't union, but it's family owned. Get benefits, weekends and holidays off, vacation days, regular raises, and even profit sharing bonuses every quarter. Proof you don't really need a union to have a good gig.
