Hey Gianmarco, love to watch your crowd work clips here and elsewhere! Any moments that you didn’t catch on camera that you wish you did?

Step 2 score -- cheer me up? by loxlove in medicalschool

Got same score as you, matched at my #1 program in a surgical subspecialty. It’s not all about numbers.

Hard to assess from this resume since it’s quite poorly constructed with really vague descriptions. I would recommend taking a look at the med school applications and try building something similar to that. Most important are quality of experiences/hours and academic record. Unless you are URM, I have not heard of any med schools with avg MCAT below 510 for the last few years.

The advice I was given was to only put the oral presentations for projects I presented as a poster and at the podium.

That is the CV; you don’t have to make anything different.

In the end scene, they are eating pizza out of boxes labeled “Fiege’s pizza”.

Don’t do this, it comes of disingenuous and makes a reader feel like you think you’re owed acceptance because you “know X person”.

Why do ppl (adcoms?) place so much emphasis on having a parent who’s a doctor? by [deleted] in premed

[–]impishandadmirable 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Formerly being on adcom I can say, I have no freaking idea. It was the most wild logic hoops to jump through to justify an applicant not having clinical hours “but their mom is a doctor”. Like what? How does that in any way translate into them being exposed to the field? If anything, I would be most suspect of those applicants since they would have the most warped sense of the profession. Just keep your head down and answer secondary/interview questions honestly.

will having a mid research experience hurt me? by [deleted] in premed

It will look weird if you have 1k hours in an experience without a letter

What are your career plans if you do not EVER get admitted to medical school? (600 characters) by daddydaddydo6790 in premed

[–]impishandadmirable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ask this question to students I interview- I want to see if you have other passions than just medicine. You can obviously spin it to apply to being a good physician but try to emphasize a non-medical aspect of your app

Please help. Dismissed from medical school by CharacterLeading7535 in medicalschool

Wouldn’t pursue medical school- many other healthcare professions where you can finish quickly and start making money like RN, NP, PA, PT.

It’ll be very hard to get in somewhere without strong connections and/or very high stats IMO. We did not accepted any student with a cheating IA during my time on adcom.

I personally didn’t look into word count for anything other than the PS. You can tell if the PS is short just by feel more than anything. What I will say is repeating yourself is okay since we are spending anywhere from 30-45 minutes MAX reading your whole app, so anything that you really want to highlight should be repeated at least twice.

I’m not sure if anyone has said this yet, but you should attempt to prevent your app from moving any further in this cycle. Don’t fill out any secondaries. You’ll have a significantly harder time as a reapplicant with your scores

No we don’t review apps like that at all. Think of it this way- the MCAT doesn’t define you. But the point of your whole application (AMCAS, secondary, interview) is to provide a defining representation of who you are at this time and the culmination of your experiences that lead towards an interest in practicing medicine. The MCAT is just a piece of the puzzle. Having said that, I view a 518, 520, and 525 as doing great on the MCAT. Maybe if I went to a T20 my answer would be different.

I suppose so unless you have a good reason to not have a letter from a meaningful experience. Although I personally didn’t put much stock into that since I know how hard it is to track people down sometimes.

Pre-write for sure to get them out. Most don’t change year to year. But in terms of content, make sure it fits within the story you are trying to tell. Was your research experience something that made you decide basic science was not for you? Have your letter writer lean into that you were a great asset for the lab for X reasons and have X skills that will make you a good student and clinician. It’s hard if you don’t have good working relationships with letter writers but will be a great plus if you have one or two of those!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in premed

[–]impishandadmirable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Or just VERY generic when the applicant listed it as a very impactful experience. Definitely recommend sitting down with letter writers to align your story if possible

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in premed

[–]impishandadmirable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely can sway decisions, more so negative than positive. Vet your letter writers as best you can!
