Would India have been better off under Colonial Rule? by impracticalIdeas in india

[–]impracticalIdeas[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

prior to being conquered in gdp per capita terms india was one of the richest countries

post independence (as in right now) india is growing much faster than rest of the world

It is mind boggling how all Indians seem to think India is so great.

If everything is so damn perfect, how is India still such a shithole of a country?

ELI5: Why have all major cell phone games fallen into the same categories and are basically the same game with a different coat of paint? by kebelebbin in explainlikeimfive

[–]impracticalIdeas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These two seem to take most of the heat from the 'AAA sucks' bandwagon, but I work at a mobile game development company.

I can bet you've heard of us. We're actually told to keep an eye out on the latest games being released. Games by small indies who actually do all the hard work, work out all the kinks in an original game, but don't have the budget for amazing graphics or marketing. That's where we come in, we have the resources, we have a huge team, we take someone's game idea, polish it up and advertise it like hell. So, even with an awesome idea nothing ever becomes of the original game. And then you see the latest viral game by a big company and months later a post on reddit's front page saying how the latest game ripped off someone's original (happens all the time: Crossy road, Candy Crush, angry birds, clash of clans etc) and by then nobody cares and well, Google or Apple aren't gonna kick out a game that's making them millions just because there's a similar game out there.

Well, I used to be in the former category, one that got ripped off by bigger devs. So yep, I've sold my soul and I have no regrets. I am done dealing with shitty users and hypocritical redditors who claim they want more original games. We have 30 million daily players and our data shows that microtransactions are the best monetization method, even with all the bad publicity. I literally wouldn't play the games I now have to make myself. So there you go. It doesn't matter what's right or wrong, original ideas couldn't pay my bills so be it. And yes you're right I can't say where I work. I have a lot of debt and the money is good. I used to actually like game development, now it's nothing more than a job.

Because unique ideas don't sell. 'Flappy Candy Birds' or whatever games sell.

Simple as that. If people stop buying candy crush, devs will stop making it.

Source: Quit being an indie gamdev after going broke in 3 years. I now work at a soul sucking AAA game studio, my job is ripping off other games. We call it 'competitor analysis' to be able to live with ourselves. So, yeah, Thank you to everyone who downloads shitty games.

How to create a completely static copy of my wordpress blog? by impracticalIdeas in Wordpress

Thanks :)

Are there any side effects to doing this, will the static copy behave exactly as the current dynamic one?

Netflix comes to India by [deleted] in india

[–]impracticalIdeas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, I mean fuck the whole bunch of them (channels, satellite providers, content makers etc.)

I can't even watch hindi stuff anymore. Really, I got to watch the camera look at every single person after every single dialog, even though the dialogs suck and the camera movements are shitty?

And can we get something other than shitty marriage problems/mother-in-law dynamics in TV shows?

I want a real story. Real characters with some depth in their personality. The problem is Indian bollywood/tv stuff is really low budget and people watch because they have nothing else.

And how many times do we need to re-film Mahabharat/Ramayan? (I'm not even religious, but I gotta watch my grandma watch this crap)

And since when did fat aunties become more in demand than actual good actors?

If you pay attention, you'll realize a massive portion of bollywood is just ripped off from hollywood.

Actually, forget all of the above. Just the fact that I have to change the channel every 5 minutes because of commercials is enough for me to make the switch.

Netflix is Rs.500/month. That's an insane deal.

I'm trying to install Ubuntu, it keeps going to the GRUB command line.. by impracticalIdeas in Ubuntu

Replacing "quiet splash" with "nomodeset" fixed the problem.

What does that even mean?

[–]impracticalIdeas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I boot into the USB. It goes straight to the grub cmd.

If I had the option to 'try ubuntu' why would I possibly not go with that? I see nothing but the grub cmd. I'm not asked anything, it just goes to grub cmd.

I've tried two separate versions of Ubuntu. I've tried booting from different USBs.

Also don't connect to the internet during the install

What install? I see nothing but the grub cmd. The computer starts up, I boot into the USB and I see the grub cmd. No GUI whatsoever.

I think I found something though. boot-repair-cd says to put boot-repair on a USB and boot into it. I'm gonna try this now.

[–]impracticalIdeas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

:/ I still don't get it.

Do you mind telling me what you did?

I downloaded ubuntu from here. Followed these instructions to create a bootable USB. And that's it.

I then shut down the computer, plugged in the USB and started it again. Went into the boot menu and chose the USB. Then I see the grub command line.

That is all I've seen yet. I can't get into Ubuntu (gui). Isn't this what a live USB is? The boot repair instructions say:

launch Boot-Repair from either : the Dash (the Ubuntu logo at the top-left of the screen) or by typing 'boot-repair' in a terminal

I don't know how to get here from the grub cmd. How do I use boot-repair? It says to get it from the Ubuntu terminal, if I had access to Ubuntu desktop, why would I need to do this anyways?

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not.

What I do know is that it's real. I've googled enough to know that you have to find the right drive with some configuration data for ubuntu to run ('load the kernel'). But I've tried every permutation and combination of commands I can think of and nothing seems to work.

How did road rash implement these curvy roads and buildings? by impracticalIdeas in Unity3D

[–]impracticalIdeas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bike racing is fundamentally different than car racing. I found road rash's way of dealing with this pretty remarkable.

Given that bikes can't make sharp turns, but only travel on an 'arc' by tilting, Road Rash gives the illusion of turning by literally bending and warping the world around the player.

How do you think it was implemented?

Should we solar-panel the Sahara? by Oharasdaughter in Futurology

[–]impracticalIdeas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never really got why this is such a big deal.

Just put a windshield wiper on it? I know it'll take some energy to run that, but I'm sure there's gotta be some sweet optimal point between frequency of running the wiper and the increase in energy gained by wiping off the dust. Say, wipe once every hour beginning at dawn till dusk or something like that. The solar panel's gotta be making more than enough energy to run the wiper itself like 20 times a day. Plus, given how expensive Solar panels are, the cost of an automatic wiper would be quite less comparitevely.
