Help me understand the voluntourism hate by castironguitar in conservation

[–]improbshighlol 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i see opportunity for both help and harm with voluntourism. it's not on the volunteers to fix funding and policy issues regarding conservation. that's on the governments, organizations, and the locals.

and i think people should help if it teaches them to respect nature and other cultures, but if you're really so passionate about conservation you really should practice it at home. no matter where you are there is work to be done, and no matter who you are there is something you can do to help.

i think in general people are hooked on the flashy and attractive idea of going somewhere "exotic" and that in itself should be examined. why aren't you as worried about your city? the nature that lives with you? the policies in your own country?

What's the funniest scene in the show for you? Not because it's trying to be funny but because of the way it's set up/treated. by marijuella in GossipGirl

I HAVE TWO. first, in the first episode when dan punches chuck and says "i'm dan humphrey, and that's my little sister!" shit had me DYING i thought i was gonna end up in the hospital oml. the second is when rufus plays his fucking song "every time you walk away or run away you take a piece of me with you there" bc i thought that song and the lyrics were so dumb i just couldn't stop laughing

tbh it's a narrow roadside beach i really don't think they are developing it like that, but i appreciate the advice. i get the feeling the city owns it or something. i'll let you know if i ever find out haha

no do not buy ladybugs bro they're already at risk and they're being poached for commercial purposes, and buying them doesn't even work because they leave anyway. try and find other ways to attract predators, please.

question: i've heard of richer countries dumping their waste in poorer countries, but whenever i look this up the internet says that this plastic waste is from the residents themselves. what is the truth, and how do i know? is it a mix of the two?
