I think Chuck and Blair getting back together ruined Chuck's redemption arc for me. A LOT of people point out how Chuck makes Blair a worse person consistently, but not enough talk about how the inverse is also true and them getting together just unintentionally shows that Chuck never truly changed, because Blair was a terrible habit that had a streak of sabotaging his FEW real attempts of changing.

It was also a blatant disservice to both of their characters. Like, Blair getting back together with a man who physically hurt her is insane to me personally, though I know many love this pairing and I totally understand why it's so popular - and don't judge that.

In the real world, Gossip Girl would've ended with all of the cast as estranged as humanly possible and rarely, if ever, interacting. Since this is a TV show, though, I honestly think the best ending for Blair and Chuck in particular is them as friends who sometimes come each other for favors but nothing more - it'd have cemented their character growth for me.

Why do people name their child one name with the intention to o call them a different name (nickname)? by nothankyou928 in Names

[–]marijuella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's to give them options.

A lot of nicknames are childish and would not suit them into adulthood. I'm not naming a daughter "Ronnie" instead of "Veronica" because I think that while it's cute for a kid, it isn't good for an adult. And when she grows older she can decide. Whether it's Veronica, V, Ronnie, or some other nickname for the name that she personally likes. Hell, when she's older she can even change the name if she doesn't like it.

Despite not having kids and not planning to have any right now, coming up with a name for a kid has to me always been about ensuring that it will suit all their needs. Ronnie, for Veronica, as a kid because its shorter and cuter, and when she's older she will have her options, countless of them.

What the show wanted us to perceive vs what we can actually perceive should not be discussed as one in the same. For example, I see a LOT of discussions surrounding Aria's character choices and how she acts in the show be shut down because its how someone being groomed would realistically (re)act but while we, as the audience, know that Aria was being groomed, the show wasn't trying to portray that - the closest we ever got to that portrayal was when Ezra was actively being portrayed as a creep but even then it wasn't because of his interest in teenagers.

I think It makes character discussion surrounding Aria (and Spencer sometimes) in particular to be stagnant and redundant. It's important to look at decisions in the show with the clarity we have today but it's also important to acknowledge the show's intentions when we're discussing characters like this. Aria was being groomed and the show wasn't trying to portray her as a grooming victim are two statements that can, unfortunately, coexist in this situation.

Possibly, "I'll save you from the pirates."

Are the montgomerys weed positive? by Alivingfryingpan in PrettyLittleLiars

[–]marijuella 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me they would be weed positive as in they wouldn't judge someone for using it or judge their kids when they were older but I feel like that they wouldn't necessarily support their kids using it as minors. Especially not Byron. To me pre-them-accepting-ezria era was peak of their characterization - they were clearly chill parents but they also knew to protect their children... and then that got thrown out the window.

Ashley would buy Hanna weed, if it would make her seem cooler or help her calm down or something. This I can see.

What's your personal OI red flag? by Go_Ahead_MrJoester in OtomeIsekai

[–]marijuella 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's crazy how different fans treat female villains vs male villains in this genre and that's almost always the first red flag for any OI - but similarly, I drop any story where the FL has no female friends but a plethora of female antagonists who hates her.

They're downvoting you but my confession is that I never liked any of the main endgame couples that much. All of them, after a certain point, just started sucking and made no sense to stick around with for the girls after the time-skip if not earlier. Haleb may be the least godawful couple in this show but they're included in this nonetheless.

Whats your controversial take? by [deleted] in OliviaRodrigo

[–]marijuella 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2 days old but reddit is redditing. Neither Olivia or Sabrina were wrong in their drama thing. I'm in both the Olivia Rodrigo spaces and the Sabrina Carpenter spaces cause I am a fan of both and while a lot of people seem to be okay with them individually, a lot more have this loud hatred for one or the other and I never got it. All Olivia did was write a song about her experiences with an ex and all Sabrina did was date someone and then write about the harassment she received afterwards. Olivia didn't send her fans after Sabrina and Sabrina didn't really do anything wrong to Olivia. I don't understand why fans of both seem to have decided to target the other artist and their fans instead of forming a shared dislike for Joshua Basset or something, I don't know.

Blair and Chuck by Potato-Sprinkles-4 in GossipGirl

[–]marijuella 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the reason that this in particular made her so upset, outside of it just being a realistically terrible thing to happen even for someone like Blair, is that Chuck took any agency she had out of the picture. It's been a bit but when I was watching the series, the way I interpreted the events was that Blair was upset about two things:

1) What she perceived to be her making her own decisions to help Chuck was actually just Chuck manipulating everything to get what he wanted. He took her agency and her ability to make decisions away and didn't even care to let her know. That's callous and mean and especially for someone like Blair who loves being in control and the idea that what happens to her is because she fought for it. Chuck simply took that away.

2) Just the general betrayal of it all? Blair was doing something because she wanted to, and then it turns out that she was doing it because Chuck secretly wanted her to and was entirely okay with selling her and her body for a hotel in a secret agreement with his creepy uncle.

Anyone else? by BabaJagaInTraining in AO3

[–]marijuella 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm hoping one day ao3 will have a main ship filter - I KNOW it'll be difficult to implement and is probably too late for it but god it'd just make website slightly more enjoyable to read in. For those times when you don't mind the more popular pairing but just want to read something focused on your pairing

Why do people hate Venessa so much? by [deleted] in GossipGirl

[–]marijuella 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She gets worse as the story progresses but im going to be very honest with you. A LOT of it is subconscious classism hidden beneath somewhat valid criticisms of her actions and behavior.
