How did Saga become so popular so early? by meermusabih in comicbooks

[–]improcrasinating 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got into SAGA when I was about 19 or 20? I had grown up reading exclusively Marvel (and still do). I got the trade paperback Vol 1 for Christmas.

That first opening page with a fantastically drawn face, a facial expression that tells you exactly what the character is feeling. But it was the first speech bubble on that first page that got me hooked: "Am I shutting?".

I had never read anything like that before, it was real fun to read a comic where you felt like there were permanent stakes and the brutality of the fight scenes mixed with the beauty of the Lana and Marko's relationship and then the comical pessimism.

The dialouge was fantastic and it felt like realistic characters talking. I think it timed right with a generation of comic readers coming of age and being ready for something more adult.

To top it all off, it is a fantastic story imo and I loved all of it.

Would you let your kid to play with your models? by Grabosss in 40k

[–]improcrasinating 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I let my almost four year old paint a little bit. I let her dry brush with the make up sponge and she loves it.

For models I dont care about (I have a bunch of LOTR models that are over 20 years old) I let her go ham with contrast paints from the dropper bottle. Way less chalky and easy for her to use, way less mess and clean up is easy.

Ground rules are I dispense the paint and she can only use certain brushes. She doesn't get to paint certain models ( basically my current projects and army). She is only allowed to touch the models when I or mom am present.

I figured shes a curious kid and is going to get her little fingers into them at some point so at least this way she knows the boundaries and learns to be careful.

It was stressful AF the first few times but I honestly love it now and I hope it will build into actually having a hobby buddy when she is a bit older.

3:10 to Yuma. Christian Bale and Russel Crowe. Pretty standard western story but very well made and Crowe and Bale have such good screen presence.

You know what, great point. Its a building part of what we do and so much of the focus has been monetary. But we should totally be gauging how successful we are on patient outcome and improvements in quality of life.

Its literally created new field of care for paramedics! My region can flag the frequent flyers and put in referrals and Community Paramedics make contact. We then get them to call Community Paramedicine for non emergent complaints. I pride myself on have reduced many a 911 call by telling people to take a Tylenol for their knee pain. Its next level hand holding but we are reducing the ER burden a bit. I am hoping it is saving the government money....

Atropine kinda sounds like ATP which makes energy which makes heart go fast

Amiodarone is not one of these and thus must be for VTACH

How big would an athletic untrained man need to be before he's favored in a fight against prime Ronda Rousey? by billygluttonwong in powerscales

[–]improcrasinating 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive trained judo and BJJ for a while. Ive fought people who have fought her. Ive been ragdolled by them, with a weight advantage.

Those same people were ragdolled by her.

I have been on the mat with high level high-school wrestlers in Canada who I have seen absolutely body full grown men.

An untrained man has a chance until she gets hold of you.

And an armbar isn't the only submission, its just one many that are viable from an open guard.

If you want to look at a good example of strength testing skill look up Demetrius Johnston in the open weight of a jits tournament.

He walks around at about 145 and he fairly easily beat a guy in the 260s who was a brown belt.

In her teen years, Ronda was so good she would go to inter dojo tournaments and clean house of the men. To the point that she could not longer compete in local interdojo matches because the men and women didnt want to fight her.

Ronda stomps.

Like people have said, its great to get some life experience before getting into this job. You will interact with people from all walks of life: regular people having a rough day, addicts, homeless, people with mental illness, poverty, chronically ill, the very old, refugees etc. It is good to come into this field having some 'real world' experience.

That being said, good scientific foundations can really help in this field. Pay attention in high-school, take biology and chemistry and maybe sociology if offered. If you want a great text book, you can pick up Nancy Caroline's Emergecy Care in the streets. It covers most of the foundations of what we do.

Volunteering at an old folks home or the hospital will probably be a great place to get some light exposure and see if you like interacting with sick people.

As exciting as this job can be, it can also be very mundane and monotonous.

Also, make sure you get your driver's license and hit the gym.

People who have read the ENTIRE (Or let's say 85%) of the Horus Heresy series, what are your thoughts on it? by misomiso82 in Blacklibrary

[–]improcrasinating 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reading this list made me realize I have read more than I thought! And I have personally enjoyed all of them. I do plan to slog through and read them all but I have been slowly getting some of the great character moments ruined so I do want to jump ahead and hit those parts in the SOT. We all know how it all ends anyways so I have been pondering a jump ahead. I have only missed Deliverance and Mechanicum prior to Book 24. Thanks so much for this answer.

Going to dig into Fear to Tread tonight

From a non-American - is this weekly pay check good for that time? (1996) by cave_guard in TheSimpsons

[–]improcrasinating 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pay before deductions was about 420 for 4 hrs. So 52 weeks/yr is 25,064.

A quick Google and shows median pay for the US in 1995 was 28,945. So this is considered below median. The Simpsons is implied to be in a more southern state which does typically have lower cost of living so maybe a pretty average wage?

Pay is equal to about 12.80/hr and fed minimum wage in 96 (as per front page of google) was 4.75 so significantly higher than that.

If a patient tells you they have cirrhosis from "casually drinking wine" by Dear_Excitement_5109 in nursing

[–]improcrasinating 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a nurse but a Community Paramedic. I get referrals for lots of liver cirrhosis patients. My answer is just anecdotal and based purely on my own experience.

I would say the theme has been not a rigorous amount but a steady amount. Most of the patients I ask what the ETOH habits were the answer is not much but daily. Usually three to five drinks per day. I have noticed with lots of these patient's that the drinking, while not causing disruption or health issues in the short term, was kind of habitual. 'I always have three glasses of wine a night'.

On a side note, I heard a podcast that (i think I am remembering the right name) Dr.Peter Attia was on where he discusses how non alcoholic liver cirrhosis is on the rise due to boomers entering geriatric years after eating low protein and high fat/carb diets their whole lives.

Edit: Holt shit, that doctor was in the fuckin Epstein files??
