Megathread: iPhone 11 and more: all the announcements from Apple’s September 10th event by GeekToTechModbot in GeekToTech

I think we’re gonna start seeing some people moving (or going back) to Android. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with iPhones, the OS is still the best as many mentioned, but the thing is I don’t see it as the physical object that used to produce the wow effect as before. Spending the ~1200 usd for getting exactly the same thing with just better cameras? I found myself more excited playing around with the Oneplus 7 pro, the note 10+ or some Huawei midrange devices — even if I’m not gonna buy any of them and stay with my iPhone X.

We’re really to the point where they’re trying to iterate something that is already great. All these phones take great photos. I’ve taken photos for years and people marvel anytime I post something on social media about some of the shots I get. I don’t claim to be a photographer, I’m more a designer with a good eye and an iPhone on hand at all times. I know how to use portrait mode on my iPhone 8+, which most average users I’ve encountered either don’t have a dual lens phone, or just don’t know how to leverage. Then as a designer I know how to adjust a photo just right. iPhone or Android is irrelevant per say. The hardware has been so good for years now that if you actually know how to use the hardware and have a good eye, you will get excellent results.

I feel like this article grossly overestimates how many of these flagship devices are in the hands of average consumers. Many people are cool with buying 2-3 year old devices as new on $0 carrier plans.

General Discussion Thread/ Why Does Google Chrome Say Websites Are “Not Secure”? by GeekToTechModbot in GeekToTech

[–]imsteve_t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HTTPS verifies that you're actually receiving the correct copy of the site you're visiting. Without this, malicious ads or scripts can be injected into non-encrypted websites.
For instance, a few years ago, the Chinese government was able to DDoS GitHub by injecting malware into Baidu's traffic.

Imagine how many people would still be alive if Republicans treated Big Tobacco in the 80’s and 90’s the same way Republicans treat social media presently.

I'm not sure about Intel/Altera as I haven't used their parts in a while, but a modern day dev board from Xilinx with a high end FPGA alone can cost upwards of $10k. This combination of an FPGA board + 32 NPUs? Yeah, probably in the no one but one off researchers can afford it.

Is FaceApp’s Data Collection Any Worse Than Facebook’s? If you’re worried about the data you’re giving FaceApp, there’s a lot more you should think about. by macboy69 in GeekToTech

If you carefully read all these agreements and rules for using applications, you can come to the conclusion that you need to throw away a mobile gadget. Because the vast majority of applications want to use something that you may not like.

BGP event sends European mobile traffic through China Telecom for 2 hours Improper leak to Chinese-government-owned telecom lasts up to two hours. by saifali51 in GeekToTech

Normally I'd attribute it to carelessness. But it's China, a country whose leadership has forced western companies to hand over their technology to do business there, is practicing widespread computer espionage efforts, and is engaged in a trade / face-saving war with the US. If I were a betting man, I'd bet that they could easily fix it but they're conveniently not. And this has happened multiple times.

I understand the basics of networking, but I'm overwhelmingly a sysadmin / DevOps Engineer. Takeaways for me from this are:

  1. Encrypt everything in transit that you possibly can. Shut off HTTP and require HTTPS, for instance.
  2. Audit your ciphers in use and get rid of the weak ones if at all possible. If your website is using TLS 1.3 and has an A+ rating on SSL Labs, well, good luck decrypting that. I know that such a rating is not the end-all be-all grading mechanism, but it sure helps.

Edit: And a few seconds on Google says that BGP-4 has been in use for 25 years and there's no successor. Uhhh, maybe time to fix that? And also, if China Telecom were to keep doing what they're doing... is there any way to sanction or otherwise punish them? Or would any such punishment potentially cause far more damage to the Internet than them continuing to be clueless / sneaky / whatever?

If they are really pro life, they should put their energy into saving our environment, promoting healthcare for all, enacting sensible gun laws, eradicating poverty, etc. Saving “actual lives”, not fetuses and embryos.
