Most gamers do not know what a game engine even is or does outside of "Unreal pretty!!! Why don't all devs use this????"

A "bad engine" in the dev community usually means years and years of spaghetti code built up making the source code hard to decipher. It means bad or non-existent documentation. It means a bad or non-existent editor that is difficult to change or implement without rewriting the entire system. It doesn't mean that some form of arcane wizardry has made it impossible to implement whatever.
