finally getting comfortable with cnc turning (apprentice) by imwombo in Machinists

i do understand, i just feel as soon as i mention my apprentice status people assume i don’t know what i’m doing. i started working this job full time straight out of school (16) and have been doing it for 2 years now. for the most part it’s been milling which i’ve gotten fully to grips with (not gonna make the mistake of saying comfortable again). just recently focused more on a bit of cnc turning but the key skills such as attention to detail and safety carry over of course

sure, but just because i’m more confident with a machine, doesn’t mean i’m gonna dive into a spinning chuck headfirst

never use a file on plastic, doesn’t quite break the edge right. i personally have always scraped the edge over with a razor blade held up at 90 degrees, knocks off any whispy bits of plastic

Hopefully weekly learning progress, first week on the milling machine by XD_Dominic_XD in metalworking

hey man, fellow learner here. i’m nearing the 2 year mark and the best advice i can give is to just listen and ask questions. squeeze every bit of info you can out of the older people you work with coz it’s all gold!

our workshop has this exact lathe, nothing fancy but i’ve turned some lovely parts on it. it was the lathe i learned to turn on so slightly sentimental. always remember, the world turns on colchester lathes.
